i went riding and hit a deep hole and when i was trying to climb  out i locked the diff and it was a while b 4 it started spinning the tire. as long as i was on the throtle it was fine but when i let off it didnt engage when i hit the gas again. what could this be a need to change the diff fluid?

No, you might need to adjust your cable.

Sounds like it pulls it just enough to stay on the gear with power applied, then slips off when backing off power. Just make a small adjustment on the cable and you should be back in business!

You can adjust it at the lever or at the diff. I adjust at the diff.
