The proper way to clean foam filters is to use a high flash point solvent first to clean out all the old oil and dirt. Kerosene/varsol/diesel/furnace oil is what to use. Then after you have done that, wash the filter in a mild soap and water detergent. Ley dry when finished. But, you can also use gasoline. It will not harm the filter....which is a common mis-conception. Gasoline, like oil, is a petroleum product. Oil is used to make the filter more effective/ Gasoline is used to break down the oil top clean it. Also, gasoline evaporates very fast and doesn't leave much residue, which means you do not have to wash it in soap/water solution. Manufacturers do not tell you to use gas because of safety concerns, since gas is highly flammable. Which would surely lead to lawsuits if anything happened. They tell you to use high flash point solvents (less flammable). Because of the nature of these solvents not evaporating very fast, and leaving a residue behind, the manufacturers then tell you to wash the filter in a soapy water solution directly after. The reason for this is becuase if any solvents are left behind, when the filter oil is re-applied to the filter, these solvents break down and thin the oil. This thined oil can be sucked out of the filter and into the engine. Thus leaving a filter with no oil.....reducing its effectiveness, and ultimately, engine failure. I hope this little write up explains a few things... Dezz
