Are the yotas SFA 79-85 or 79-84? I'm thinking till 85, need to know fast might have a yota.

1985 was the last year, I know for a fact... I had one. 1985 1/2 was the first year model for the IFS.

i know they went to irs in 85 but didnt know the first ones were straight axle.

Yeh I realy want a 4cyl SFA 4 runner but I can't find any within reason. How hard would it be to get a 4 runner body and slap it on the truck frame?

Sounds like more work and money than the truck is worth. If you can find a body, then you should be able to find a complete 4Runner. If you decided to go that route, than it would probably be less work to put the pickups running gear into the 4Runner.

Yeh it probably would be easyer, never thought of that. Its just I feel cramped in my buddies yota, plus I need sub room, extra people room and I love the way yota's look with the soft camper shell on them.

They do look good, I agree. I also had a 4Runner and I loved it. It was a '90 model, so it was IFS, 4 door, and the top was not removable but I loved that little truck anyway. It had the 22RE motor and 5 speed manual. Great running little truck. I only sold it because I needed more towing capacity with a 16' low boy and three ATV's.

Man thats clean, I would love to have one like that but I'm a teen and I know its going to get ragged on so I want something that can take anything. I will probably get a 4 door as a second truck after I get done in my ragging spree. Only thing is doing the SFA swap, I don't have a welder. So it would be kinda hard to do that.

Oh and some black window visors and fender fliars would just make that toyota awsome!

Yeah, it was nice for a '90. It had never been repainted and there wasn't any rust, scratches or dents on it anywhere. It was owned by an older man and I was the second owner. He gave all the records/receipts of every thing that had ever been done to it, including oil changes. It had pretty low mileage considering the age too. It had 129,000 on it when I sold it a few months ago. The guy that bought it from me painted it camo, put custom pipe bumpers on it with a rack on top and now it is permanently stationed at a deer lease.

What a shame, I would drive that thing around with pride! My dads best friend had a old first generation 4 runner, almost 300 000 miles and he sold it due to rust. Running gear was still perfect to, gotta love that 22re.

Yeah it was a great running little truck, absolutely nothing wrong with it. I did drive it with pride!! Like I said, I only needed more towing capacity. I hated to get rid of it. I kept it for quite a while after buying my new truck just cause it was in such good shape and I liked it so much. Plus it wasn't costing me anything, it was paid for. I ended up selling it because I rarely drove it anymore, it just sat in the garage and took up space. I would get it out once a week or two and drive it to work and back just to keep it running. I was having to keep insurance on it and it was just going to waste so I thought I would go ahead and let it go. It's someone else's baby now.

I realy love the red on the older 4 runners. Only problem is that dang IFS. But I've got about $3000 for a truck so I might be able to get the 85 yota and the 4 runner then put them under the knife

and get some POS outa it.

My old '85 pick up was red. Unless you're planning on some hard core wheeling, then I wouldn't be scared of IFS. They are fine for some occasional light to moderate wheeling. Problem though is that big lifts are complicated and expensive.

Since you seem to know you stuff about yotas, do you think a IFS could put up with:

35 to 37 inch tires
Weekend abuse
Lots of trail riding
Local mud bog
and last a teen with a few beers in him?

NO. If you plan to put tires on it that large and wheel it every weekend while under the influence, definately go with a straight axle. Or you could always just make it more show than go and use your ATV for the wheeling! Also, you say you only have around $3000 for a truck and you're wanting 35-37" tires? I honestly don't think you're going to be able to afford this. Not to be rude and I hope you don't take it that way or putting you down, but those big tires are very expensive and it doesn't stop there. You have to buy an expensive lift to make them fit. Then, you have to change out the gears in the front and rear to get them moving and that's expensive as heck too. Then, they start breaking u-joints, diffs, etc. Then you will be bumming a ride to school because you broke your truck over the weekend and can't afford to fix it right away. You're better off wheeling your ATV and let your truck remain running and dependable. I've been there trust me. I broke my 4x4 trucks all the time when I was in high school and it would some times take me months to save up enough to fix it...only to break it again a month later. Then I wised up and bought an ATV and kept my truck out of the rough stuff. Don't get me wrong, I still have a 4x4 truck plus my 4x4 Jeep and they both get dirty from time to time but only when there is a need for it. My wheelers on the other hand hit all the mud holes though because I don't count on them to get me to work on Monday morning.

I understand you, but around here it's not realy pratical to have an atv. Their are alot of places to go wheeling but they are all smaller. You can go through all the trails on an atv in about 2 hrs. The $3000 budget is just for getting the truck. Once I get a ride I will be getting myself a job, therefore I will be putting half what ever my pay is into the truck monthly. I just want to do all the stuff that will put the truck out of commison for more then a weekend. Also if I find out that this sport is very expensive I will sell another 4 wheeler to get me a lil car as a back up.

And I HATE mall hopper trucks, I don't see any point in 35+ tires on a 2wd truck, speed bumps arnt that big

If you have a back up car then by all means go for it. There are going to be some expensive repairs along the way that you won't see coming such as blown motors and transmissions. You may have more mechanical skill than I do and can do more of the repairs then I can for much cheaper. I can change water pumps, alternators, brakes, fuel pumps, etc. myself but when it comes to rebuilding an engine or tranny, I have no choice but to put it in the shop and face the music.

I can rebuild engine pretty good now, trannys are a different story but with someone who knows what they are doing looking over my shoulder and a good manual I can get it done. If their is anything I can't tackle my friends dad owns an auto shop that I gave a hand a few times at and I get a good rate at

Im still going to wait and see if I can get my dream 4 runner. Seems to be the cheaper then doing a body/SFA swap.

do what I did - I bought an 88 22re for cheap and have been fixing it up since January plus having fun with it on the weekends. Now mine doesnt have a big ole lift and 35+ tires - its only got a 3" body and 32's which do everything I want it to... Plus I drive it back and forth to work everyday. Its got 210K miles on it and every body panel had dents in it and the bed was just about rusted through completely no back brakes whatsoever no a/c, windshield almost in pieces but it ran good. Well now its got another bed on it with a tailgate, new windsheild, new front right fender, almost a/c (it works just leaks - I'm putting some leak detectant in it this week to try and fix that) brakes,hubs,axles on the rear, different wheels so on and so on... It's been a work in progress but its getting there. Working on a few of the dents today then it'll be painted camo this weekend. It was nothing to look at but I wanted one for the dirt roads and hunting so I could keep my new ford out of the woods and well the ford sits now and I drive this everywhere.... I'll get some pics of it soon. Want to finish the paint first.

oh yeah another thing - buy one with a good running gear in it then buy a wrecked one or junked one so you have spare parts.... Well worth spending another 300 or 400 dollars on a wrecked one.

Just find you a runner cheap like you want with IFS, run some 33s with little lift and trimming, while you save up and buy a 85- toyota front axle, and gather parts for the SAS (solid axle swap) you can buy the kits with everything you need for $1000-$1600+... Thats what alot of toyo guys do.

if you want to buy a modded 4runner i have one i would let go for a good price. an 84 with a gm 4.3 v6 factory 5-spd 4.88 gears about 12-14 inches of lift new 39.5x15x15 tsl on alum wheels front and rear bumpers upright warn winch just needs a little tlc nothing mechanical wrong let me know
