I'm new to this awesome website as well as quads. I'm looking forward to getting a winch for my Sportsman 800. Which is better, Warn or Viper? I've seen and heard a lot of what Team Warn had to offer with their winches. I don't really know much about the Viper winches. I will be doing extreme hunting and trail riding with my quad  and want to know if the 3000lb is too over kill, or is it good for me to buy the 2500lb to meet my standard of use as mentioned. Like I said, I just bought my new quad and don't know much, so please feel free to express your preference and opinions.

Warn is pretty much the leader when it comes to Winches.

My personal experience has been that you get what you pay for with a Winch. I went with the "cheaper" winch one time, and it caused me a lot of problems. MAybe I just got a bad one but, it seemed like every time I turned around I was having to fix something on it.

If you ride an 800 (I assume you do from your screen name) I'd say go with the 3000lbs winch. Just about every article I've ever read on winch sizing has said if you try to save a few pennys by purchasing an undersized winch, you're really just wasting your money int he end. The rule of thumb is to buy one that can handle 30 - 50% more weight than what your total setup will be. So take into account a lot of things... if you are hunting, get bogged down with a big animal on your rack.. and all your hunting gear loading it down, take into consideration how much weight you may need to winch out...

If you are new to winching you might want to read this: http://www.warn.com/corporate/images/90/UserManualSRC.US.readers.pdf

You can not go wrong with a viper. They are just as good if not better than a warn and all at less than half the price. If you ever do have a problem with it Peter and his crew at motoalliance will get you taken care of. Lots of threads on this subject. I have gone through two warns and two mile markers and have settled on the viper. It has already out lasted my other ones. As far as size.........get the biggest one that'll fit. Its better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks guys. The information you guys provided was really useful. I talked to a local Polaris Dealer guy and he said that the 3000lb was too over kill and that I wouldn't need it, but I agree with MuddinMaynard and DevilDog, it is really better to have it and not need it than need it than need it and not have it. I heard a lot of guys with pride in their Viper winches, so it got me thinking twice about getting the Warn. I also heard about the 4000lb, which I think is too over kill for what I'm doing, but it might come into good use for others. MuddinMaynard does have a good point about having all my hunting gears on along with a big game winching myself out; I never really thought of that since this is going to first time taking my quad out this hunting season. I don't think you could go wrong with both WARN and Viper Winches. Thanks again, the information provided was really useful.

Like I said man regardless of brand you really can't have one thats "overkill". I routinly have to pull out my brother and his friend in their trucks. They are just finishing highschool and have discovered our local bottoms. LOL Big brother to the rescue, with the QUAD!

I had a Warn 2500 on my 05 Foreman and it couldn't pull a stick. I agree with devildog, get the biggest that will fit. It would suck if you needed it and didn't have it. My next winch is going to be the Viper Max 4000 for the brute.

definately go bigger then a 2500 i'm running a 3500 xtreme on my 08 800 and love it I got it off of ebay with the mounting bracket for 160 bucks.  I've had a warn 3000 that lasted me 4 years and loved it but the xtreme I have now is basically the same with alot more power and awhole lot cheaper.

Wow, I guess it really does have a good use for pulling out trucks. My truck got stuck in mud once on a cold rainy November day and it wasn't pretty at all. Well, well, well, lets go with the VIPER 4000LB. I have DevilDog's word on this one.

ive had a viper max for about 6 months now. and i love it. it is dependable and reliable. i use it alot too.  sometimes to pull me out of mudholes or for work pulling small stumps out or moving logs. i am very satisfied with mine. viper has excellent customer service too. i was having trouble with mine when i first got it. i called them up and was on the phone for a good 10 minutes with them. they worked with mr to find out what was wrong. turns out i just hooked the wires up wrong. i recomend viper
