So I ordered a synthetic winch cable for my winch. It will be in this week, so I took the cable off today and the cable bolted to the winch different than I have seen on other winches. The cable actually went through part of the spool and held in with a set screw...How will I bolt a synthetic rope like this one: http://i17.ebayimg.com/08/i/000/bc/5d/fafc_12.JPG on the spool? Thanks for the help. Ryan

Shouldn't your synthetic bolt up just like your other one did ? I just ordered an Amsteel for mine but I haven't pulled my old synthetic one off yet...

A little bit of lesson learned advice I learned, unspool your whole rope about once a month or after you get it wet so it will dry and not sit unused for a while. I didn't do that and didn't use my winch till about 8 months after I got it, it worked fine a few times but about the 5th time I used it and put a heavy load on it, it broke...three times in a row. It looked like it almost kind of dry rotted from sitting spooled up and getting wet from riding in creeks...

Replace the allen head set screw with a round head set screw and then use the terminal.

I replaced the winch cable on a couple of Warns with synthetic. I pushed the synthetic line through the hole, tied a knot in it, melted it down a little with a torch and called it GOOD.
I don't know if that helps...maybe a pic of your spool without the cable on it so we could see what you're talking about. I don't remember seeing one with a set screw.

Most of the major brand winches attach like Hatchie says and thread into the drum and back out with a small steel button that wedges in.

Make sure you keep a few wraps on the drum that crimp will not hold much weight.

Cant really see the typing but the red circles are where the cable went through and the set screw is circled in blue. The only thing is, I dont have a major brand winch. It is a THAC atv 2000 lb winch...works perfect and didnt pay much. Its a replica of a Superwinch model. Hope the pic explains.

That's the same spool as most other brands. It's just got a set screw too.
If you thread it in the little hole toward the big hole, you'll have room for the knot and the wraps will lay flat over it.

Todd is right. Make sure you keep one layer of wraps on the spool!

The easiest way I have found to keep the first 4-5 wraps on is to basically granny-knot them on the drum.
I know I have had two times I have gotten two much rope off the drum, one was at Mud Nats pulling a Polaris out of the pit with a locked up tranny, the other I was in a ditch in Kansas in my truck.
Since then I have been granny-knotting the drum and it has worked like a charm!

You just need a hawse fairlead. The roller fairleads can cut the rope if it goes to the side any. Gearing??? You wont have any problems with the gearing bro. Its all the same.

Yes a synthetic will go on ANY winch.
The speed of the drum does not matter.
The Hawse Fairlead is always something to look into, especially if you cannot see your winch to make sure the cable is not pilling to one side and to keep the AmSteel out of the corners of the rollers.
The biggest problem I have with Roller fairleads is that the AmSteel Blue or AmSteel is so smooth that it will not make the rollers turn.
I have personally gone to using a UHMW fairlead which is made of a very similar material to AmSteel, so there is very little friction between the two materials ( read less wear ). You can look at EBay item #250279900807 to see what I am talking about.

Yea the kit I went with was on ebay and it was the 50 ft Amsteel blue synthetic rope, 5 ft chafe guard, UHMW hawse fairlead, winch saver, and new hook. All of it was $84.75 after shipping and it was here in 2 days. Item number: 280264101813 on ebay. I got it on today and love it. the hawse fairlead is low profile and I'm no longer scared of knocking my back window out with my roller fairlead.  But thanks to all the guys that helped with all my questions about putting it on.

Glad to hear it,
I sell those UHMW fairleads and have yet to have a problem with them that was not caused by operator error...
