I got a 07 sportsman 500 EFI and this past weekend went riding.  I went into a water hole that was up to the top of my fenders and it died right in the middle of the hole.  We pulled it out and there was no water in my airbox but i did get water in my oil.  The next day I changed my oil and filter.  I also drained the water out of my exhaust.  I tried to start it but the dang thing wont start.  My injector is spraying fuel and I am also getting spark through my spark plug.  Anyone have any ideas?

Well I just checked the codes and it is flashing code 22 which is the TPS.  Anyone know how to adjust it?

Are the throttle position sensors bad about going out?

Yes, I have plenty of compression.  If i give it gas when I try to start it, it will sometimes backfire.

Sometimes even if you can see spark on the plug it is not strong enough to ignite all the fuel being sprayed in the bike.  Not saying that is your problem, but putting in a new plug is a cheap thing to try.  The reason you got water in the oil is the crank case vent line -they have a slit in them down by the motor - it is easy to replace and saves some oil changes.

If you got a bunch of water in your exhaust to the point where you had to drain, you may have to tip the bike up on the back rack.  If there is water still in the header or pipe the bike will not start.  I have seen that on that trail multiple times.

Other than that, as long as you are getting fuel and strong spark then you are hitting all of your key points to make an engine run.

Yes it will turn over but wont start.  I did flip it up on the back rack and turned it over a few times to drain the water out of the exhaust.  I am going to get a new spark plug today and try it.

Ok I pulled the connectors off of the sure-fire-box and blew them out.  I plugged them back in and tried to start it and still nothing!  All it does is turnover.  I ordered a TPS and it is suppose to be here wednesday so I guess we will see if that works.

wfo: I don't have a factory service manual yet, BUT... I do have a 1200cc inline 4 that I have done a lot of work on/with (Suzuki) and it has TPS -- adjustment of the TPS is fairly "touchy" with that bike... basically the TPS with that bike "smooths things out" when properly adjusted and slightly better fuel mileage is achieved... BUT back to your situation -- If I unplug the TPS connector on the 1200 bike, the bike runs and runs very good.. very "touchy" and in fact you might call it "race tune"... seems the first generation bikes did not have TPS (that model) and they later put it on to increase mpg a little.

Anyway, if the 500 works like the 1200 and you think you have a bad TPS, try unplugging it while you are waiting for the new part... maybe you can go riding??

Had this same problem with my 05 500. Changed the sprk plug and it busted right off. Didn't make sense to me because just like you when I pulled the plug it looked like it had good spark to me.

if you mess with the tps sensor you have to recalibrate it and the dealer or someone with the right tools is the only way to get it right.  The majority of the problems with the efi systems is the wiring to the sensor.  the wiring will break within the insulation.

Interesting -- I have worked on a Trans Am TPS and also a Suzuki 1200 TPS and only used a volt ohm meter to dial them in.. ran great.

With the Suzuki tho, like I said.. just unplug it and bike ran great.

Just found my manual for the 08 sportsman 500.  Here is the checks for the tps   pin 1 is violet, pin 2 is dark green, pin 3 is orange.  using an ohms meter measure resistance from pin 2 to ground = nothing if any resistance the sensor is bad.  measure from pin 1-2 with throttle closed ahould be 4 Kohms.  measure from pin 1-2 with throttle open should be 820 ohms. measure from pin 1-3 should be 4-6 Kohms.  if all these check right start pullin on wires and see if u see the insulation changes to a lighter color if it does wire broken inside.
