With pricing so close, my son can't decide between the '08 800 or '09 550 xp. If you were to chose one which would it be and why? Thanks!

What kind of riding does he do the majority of the time? That would make a difference.

I would buy the 800--its been around for a while-- the 550 is new to the market.

I have a 07 800 and 550 xp. I think it depends on how it will be ridden. The 800 has alot more power and alot more storage! If pure power and torque are a priority go with the 800. Otherwise I feel the 550 is a far superior machine. Next year I (hopefully) will be trading in the 800 for a 850. I myself could not go back in displacement after having the 800!!

Go with the 2009 550xp they say it has alot of power, they compare it to the 700 in power.  The 800 has struts. Get away from those struts up front, they're a pain in the butt to deal with. Plus the steering will be easier even without power steering on the 550 vs the 800.

For trail riding I say the 550 but beware... I don't know how well the stock tires will perform in the rocky stuff and you will need to add some storage. Overall the XP machines are alot less work to ride on challenging trails. Lighter steering, less heat, more comfortable seat(some disagree, but I love the seat) better/lower CG,smoother suspension that is better at soaking up big rocks, downed trees ect...
Now for majority time utility use I'd pick the 800(or the 850 if it was a coice, lol)
With that said,I am not taking price into consideration...some sweet deals on new 08 800's right now.
