I have a 2000 polaris sportsman 500. seemed like the last time i rode everything broke. 1st the bike will only start with the pull start. it gets no spark with the starter. I have replaced the battery, start switch and coil. It still will not fire just cranks. 2nd blew a belt when i last rode put a belt on and it will not disengage if u crank it in gear it will roll forward. seems like the belt is to tight. made sure its the right belt and the right direction I think I have have to ajust the trans or center space between the clutchs. 3rd now my recoil just broke pulled the cover off and the spring went flyn just spent 2 hours tryn to wind it back. I gave up can i just buy a compressed spring?? ahhh Iam just so fed up with buyn parts and it still is not fixed

WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF OLDER QUADS. I have an '02 and she's not being nice right now. Guessing on your starting problem your ignition switch has an issue. Unless it's a pristine 500 I'd bypass it. The "walking" problem is belt alignment. You can see how many shims are behind the secondary clutch and try removing or adding. Check your motor mounts. Bad mounts will cause an alingnment issue. I ride deep water so I gutted the pull start. Hope this helps

just got through with my 97 pull starter also. had a piece that broke inside, was going to replace it and my spring with hay wire also. carried it to the Polaris shop here. the replaced and fixed my rope for 35 bucks while i waited on it. well worth the money for me.

Well it only has 900 miles on it. It was my dads so its like new. How would I bypass the ignition?? Could it be the cdi?? I always thought if the cdi goesx out nothing would work.

I have no idea what your mechanical abilties are, so sometimes rather than guess and replace parts, it's cheaper to get a mechanic to fix it. I have to have some carb work on mine and I'm carrying it to the dealer. He knows how to fix it and what it needs, I might risk messing up something else, so I'm taking the mechanic route.
