I am borrowing my wifes moms prowler this weekend to go to the Red River Mud Bog (whitehead's) Labor Day Weekend ride. The prowler has been sitting in her barn for the past 8-9 months and hasnt been ridden much at all but it runs fine. She seems to think that it needs the oil changed. It has 288 miles and 44 hrs on it. The oil was changed once for the initial break in tune up. Do yall think I should go ahead and change it or what???

I am borrowing....

This should answer the question right there.  That's cheap rent.  If it makes no difference at all to the machine, but makes her feel better, IMHO it should be done.  Within reason of course, if you're going to borrow the machine every other Tuesday I'm not suggesting to change the oil every other Tuesday...

In a less than ideal environment, six months tops, maybe less.

That'd be reason enough for me, depending on the environment it's stored in.  I don't trust oil after a year or so (Which the industry now considers "standard life" versus the old and very outdated three month recommendation). In a less than ideal environment, six months tops, maybe less.  Not knowing the particular barn, I'd suspect a "good" environment, but still short of ideal.

At some point, the time takes over and trumps the usage hours and/or mileage.

but it runs fine.

It will run fine no matter what shape the oil is in.  Right up until the bearings lock up, the piston siezes, smoke starts billowing, etc., etc.  Not that you're at that point by any means, I'm not suggesting that you are, but how well an engine runs doesn't reflect in any way that the oil needing changing, it's more of a reflection of mechanical damage due to failing to change the oil before it was "used up".  Again, I really, really doubt you're at the point of immediate short term damage if you squeak another ride or two out of it, just as I've said, that it's harder to trust oil to still be in good condition after a certain point.

For one ride?  I'll stand firm on my first thought before I say it's gonna blow up, but if it were mine, I'd be throwing fresh oil at it because I wanted new oil in it.  Borrowed, I hate to borrow but when you've got to do what you've got to do...  In that case the owners "whim" IMHO takes a much higher precidence than if she just called up out of the blue every other Tuesday and asked you to drop everything and come over and do an emergency oil change.

Thanks guys. I have been working 12 hrs a day, 6 days a week. The less work I do after work the better. Thats the only reason I asked. It looks like I will be changing it since I am "borrowing" it" and if I bring it back in better shape than when i left with it she will probably care less about me taking it in the future.

The only reason I am borrowing it in the first place is cause my buddy doesnt have a four wheeler and I aint trying to look **** on my rincon. I wish he would get one so he will come join the fun. If he comes to a few rides maybe that will persuade him into buying one.
