I currently have a 2006 Chevy Silverado 1500 crew cab 4x4 w/ 23k miles.  I am paying $450/month on the ****ed truck and I only get 16.5mpg on a good day.  I've really been wanting to trade it in on a Cummins but since my father's name is also on the title (co-signed since I'm only 20) I can't do it without his signature and that won't ever happen.  I'm now looking for a 2005+ Tacoma Double Cab.  Anyone have any experiences with these trucks?  I'd think they would get better gas mileage being a 4.0 6cylinder.  They should also be lighter than my truck is now which would also help with power issues.  I'm also kind of curious how long the bed on them is?  I see they have a long bed option.. but it doesn't look too much longer, if any.  Toyota's website is junk and won't tell you things like wheel base.  Anyone got the low down on them and want to help me out?

You are gonna be going from 16.5 and a real truck to maybe 19-20 and have a grocery getter. I will admit though that I like the looks of the Tacoma's, but looks will only get you so much. IMO you are gonna lose your butt in the trade and never be able to recover the cost with the 3-4 mpg's. Keep the truck you have and you will be better off. There is a lot of stuff you can buy for the GM's to make it like a new girlfriend. lol

I guess I forgot to mention that I got screwed over and bought the 4.8L in my Silverado.  The truck is sackless and searches gears on 20* incline hills.  Honestly I wouldn't mind having a grocery getter for now.  Once I get a few more toys then I'll get a diesel to pull the stuff around, but that would have to be after a salary raise and maybe a Captain or Lt position.  The truck will mostly be used in town with a little bit of play when taking the wheeler out.  I guess this one picture of a DC Taco is what has got me wanting one.  Tell me this truck isn't sexy.

You could pull the 4.8 out and drop a 6.0 in there for pretty dang cheap.

Goin from ~220hp 250TQ  to ~265hp 280 TQ.
And you could tell everybody its a 4.8... :D

Not to mention you could get a lil better gas mileage..

I can squeeze 17 out of mine in town... Thats babying it best i can but it will do it.. and 22-23ish on the interstate..

I don't think I'm going to be doing anything like that with this truck.  It's an '06 with 23k miles.  Just got the three to show like 5minutes ago actually when I pulled into my driveway.

Oh wow.. thats nice. my poor truck has 190k miles..   Granted only thing that has that many miles is the Body/Frame and Driveshaft/Rear minus bearings and Diff..

Yeah, it's decent.. but the payments are starting to suck!  I'm just more pissed at how sackless the danged truck is.

I understand you wanting to trade up the truck but do some things like a programmer, intake and exhaust to help the power issues and they can also boost your mileage. And if you went to a Taco and built it like the one pictured you would be lucky to get the milage you have now.

If its that slack you should re-gear it. If you did you could pull those hills better then a tractor. Program it and put in a K@N intake system and your set. And even get better gas probally up to 20 mpg

Maybe I'll try doing a cat-back exhaust and a CAI.  I found a decent lift kit for pretty cheap.. considering the IFS.  That was one of the reasons I was going towards the Taco as well.. cheaper kits and everything.

Can't beat this I don't think though.. https://4wheelonline.com/addMapPop.aspx?productID=68724

Includes front CV shaft too.

You will be wasting your time trading for a V6 Tacoma. I drive a crew cab 4x4 Chevrolet Z-71 with the 5.3 engine in it. My wife drives a crew cab Toyota Tacoma 4x4 with the V6 in it. We get the EXACT same gas mileage and I have a lot more truck. The little V6 puts out too much horse power to be real fuel efficient. The only way to get great gas mileage out of the small trucks is to get a little 4cyl 5 speed pick up.

Its not sexy at all

you need a custom tune to get rid of the TM control the computor is killing your power off, plus the tune will give you better fuel mileage as well. your truck should be getting better then that out on the HWY but 16 to 17mpg is about right with alot of in town driving.

Adding a lift kit and bigger tires helps your power and milage NONE.

you would have to sit down and crunch a lot of nuber, a lot of people think that they will come out ahead if the get rid of their bigger vehicle for something smaller. you need to figure out how much you owe and if you will lose on your trade and the years youve lost paying on this truck and having to start all over compared to the few miles more per gallon youll save and really see if its worht it, if your truck would be paid off that would be a whole different story. i almost did the same thing i have a 04 yukon and was gonna trade it in on a smaller suv that got better mileage and there was no situation that i wouldve come out ahead so i just kept what i got
