Finally bent the tierods/ends on the Rincon. Not regular wheeling; I rolled it at high speed.  Anyway, I have been wondering if I should buy the OEM tierods from Honda or get aftermarket? Are the aftermarket ones any better? Stronger? Which do you recommend?

You can get stronger/better aftermarket ones but I prefer to leave them OEM, they are a weak link, you will just break something more expensive next time.

Unsubstantiated statement;  there is no way of knowing that something more expensive will break next time.

I disagree, why not upgrade to something that is stronger.  Is there any proof that Honda built thier tie-rods to be "the weak link"?

Hey Mac do you run ape arms, bigger tires, etc., etc.?  According to your reasoning...............well you get the picture.

Well, I agree with both of you. I know they need to be stronger e.khanson, but I agree with mac102004 that they are meant to be a weak link in the steering. If the tie rod doesn't bend, it will bend my steering stem or worse the steering knuckle. I was thinking of making some with heim joints(rod ends) and some dom tubing like I run on my monster truck, but I don't want to "overbeef" the tierods for the aformentioned reasons. In my case, I rolled it, so that bent them. Don't want to be strong enough to stop that from happening b/c something else will give. I did have one tierod end wearing out on one side and that is the main reason for my question, I was soon going to replace them anyways. So the vote is OEM? Anybody run quadboss or epi stuff? Probably junk from what I hear of other products they make, right?

To start I would use 3/4" x .120 (1/8th) wall dom with 1/2 x 1/2 rod ends and grade 8 bolts of course. Probably way too beefy.  You would have to drill the knuckles out to remove the taper from the oem tie rod ends to run the straight (taperless) through design of the heim. Easy to do, but will probably cost more than oem in the end, stronger yes, but more $ because I would run quality stuff. I do like fabbing though If I make them, do y'all want a set?

No, just because I think that its a good idea to leave the stock tie rods on doesn't mean I think you should leave every other weak link on too. I'm just saying I would rather a bent tie rod than a bent steering stem, broken knuckle, or even a broken wrist, arm, hand etc.

"I disagree, why not upgrade to something that is stronger.  Is there any proof that Honda built thier tie-rods to be "the weak link"?"

Only proof I can think of is common sence. In the steering you have the knuckle, tie rod and ends, stem, handle bar clamps and the hanle bars themselves, what would you consider the weak link to be?

I totally agree mac. Not only common sense, but common practice too(car manufacturers design it this way); basically, it is designed to be the weak link in the steering. And I know what the next weak link is by looking underneath my rincon; the stem. The knuckles look stronger to me and I have seen the stems get tweaked in accidents/rolls, but never a knuckle. So you're still voting OEM mac? Does that "big black monkey" company make any?

No, I don't think you'll EVER see something like that published.  Maybe they did, maybe they didn't.  I would beg you to consider this-  How hard of a hit does it take to bend a tie rod?  How hard to you want that hit to be?  Forget the machine's well being for the moment, the remainder of the components between the wheels and you are easily strong enough to break your arm or wrist if something doesn't give.
They aren't as strong as they could be, but they do take signifigant abuse to bend them, and they are dirt cheap.  Thus my reasoning for feeling that stock tie rods should be left as is, regardless of what Honda thought...

.02 only, and ONLY the tie rods.  If you can find a suitable stronger, or more appropriately, a more durable tie rod end, then I'm all for that, as the OEM ones are plenty strong, but they do wear more quickly than they need to IMO.
