i havent been able to ride for the past 3 weeks and i still got 3 more weeks to go but i go out every couple of days and crank the bike to let it run

right before i broke my arm i had to replace the battery cuz of a dry cell in it, got one of those optima type batterys but for an atv and it looks like a solid battery for how much i paid for it

but when i go out to start it i hit the start button and nothing happens, so i let off and ill hit it again this time hitting the gas a little bit and usually it will start to start u can hear it but sometimes u gotta do it again, what causes this delay or whatnot, is it a bad ground or is my starter starting to go out on me or what?

could be a bad ground, starter sylenoid, or starter brushes. get a test light and check for power going to the starter.

well i looked at a few things yesterday, its not either 30 amp fuse on either side of the solinoid, could possibly be the ground cuz i did undo it from the frame once and the problem didnt start to happen until after it was removed and put back in place, im guessing that it could be the ground or it could be the solinoid, i turn my key on and hit the start button and nothing so i hit it and release it a few times till it starts to crank and when it does i just hit the gas and off she goes running...ima try the ground wire that i undid from the frame and start there, then ill try the solinoid

I'm a little confused by your question-

You hit the starter and "nothing" happens? Like a dead battery? Or is it actually cranking just fine, but will not run? (For example, when you turn off the kill switch, the electric starter motor will crank the engine just fine, but the engine will not run)?

when i walk up to the bike and turn the kill switch to the on position that will allow me to start the bike i stick my key in and lights come on and i hit the start button it just clicks at the solinoid and starter doesnt spin or anything, so i let the start button up and hit it off and on a couple times and then she will eventually try to fire up and usually the first time i may have to hit it off and on for like 5 or 6 times and after that if i shut it down and crank it back up it will sometimes crank first time but then others i may have to hit the start button off and on 2 or 3 times and it still will make that clicking noise at the solinoid

i noticed while riding on saturday that i never took my bulb out of my rear taillight, at mud nationals someone hit me from behind and busted my red plastic cover and busted the bulb but it has still had power to it this entire time, i have yet to pull the rest of the bulb out and touched the bulb wires by accident and i got a nice semi shock, prob didnt shock me but i just saw sparks or a flash and was like wow and it just got my attention...would that bulb being exposed to the weather with it still drawing a current when braking and stuff cause any problems for my starting
only other thing i could think of is that maybe when i did my welding for my oil cooler relocation i should have disconnected the battery while welding on the rack

any ideas on if either of those would cause it or is the starter just stiff or something? or is the solinoid going out on it?

loose cable on the main power system, add some d grease to the frame ground and check all battery and solenoid connections,
not the bulb, it should have no power sent to it unless your hitting break (assuming this is on the bb) or the headlights are on, still should remove it but not the problem here

have you gotten the pod wet lately? Im guessing no since the broken arm and all

when i broke my arm the pod didnt get wet at all, i rolled it in some ruts without water in them and that is when i broke my arm

i had rolled it the week before that in some water but all that happened was the end of the snorkel had gone under

yea it may be the battery grounded to the frame wire, cuz i did unhook it and put it back on, i have delictric grease on everything cept like the busted up bulb which still has power to it and the ground cable were it hooks to the frame

i guess ill just keep rolling with it till it finally fully goes out then ill know what it is for sure

I didnt mean when you broke your arm thats been long enough to dry out
I meant you havnt had it pod deep in a while

nah havent had the pod deep since prob mud nationals in the sand pit and that was for a breif short few seconds at most

i go back next wed. to see the doctor and hopefully he will give me the all clear, i went riding saturday with some people i hit a couple holes by myself with my bike but then i jumped in a buddys rhino and he rode me around...it wouldnt be so bad riding with it broken but my darn 4x4 accuator motor on my front diff is busted and it finally went out, luckily its stuck in 4wd so that is sometimes a good thing but hard as crap to turn with 1 arm

i dont hav emy broke arm in a cast or anything but it isnt 100% strong yet, still can only carry a case of beer with that arm, and pushing kinda hurts in the palm area more than anything...i was using it when i rode those few holes but it was really dry out riding and you can feel all the bumps and i figured the jarring back and forth in the bars wouldnt help it any so i parked it and got in the rhino

but hopefully he will say ur clear to go tear some stuff up again

i just had the same problem on my eiger, i took the starter off and apart and the spring brushes were hung up and not pushing down so i cleaned it really good and put it back together now it works. my wheeler had the same symptoms you are describing... try it

but what causes it to not wanna start then all of a sudden start?

is it hard to take the starter apart? once off of the bike?

Next time give the starter a quick tap and see if the starter kicks over. If so it may be the brushes sticking in the starter. If you take your time they aren't tough to rebuild.

starters are easy to rebuild, i'll even give you step by step instructions if needed, but you need to make sure it's the starter (most common) or the solenoid with a test light. if your getting power to the starter and it's not working then the brushes are the most common problem. the reason they might work and not is that they are making partial contact with the armature (sticking brush) or they are bad.
