I am getting read to buy a new bike. I really like the way the Rubicon 500 looks but I have not met anyone that rides one in mud. Would this machine be a decent bike for the mud or would a foreman be a better choice. I am trying to narrow it down. I am considering a can-am outlander or a honda, either the rincon, rubicon or a foreman.

opinions?

Been there and done that.  The Honda Rubicon is a fantastic machine but it's not the strongest mud bike out there.  You'll have problems turning larger mud tires in the muck without extensive modifications.  The Foreman would probably be a better choice over the Rubicon for a mud machine.  Before deciding on a Honda...I highly suggest you look at both Can-Am and Kawasaki.  Both bikes will have their pros / cons.  I ended up choosing the Outlander 650 when it was time to replace the Rubicon and have zero regrets.  Take your time and choose wisely.

not sure why you would say the foreman would be a better choice unless you're trying to run the rubicon in low automatic.  When running the rubicon through mud in has to be in esp low 1.  Never use the auto or it will bog it down.  My rubi ran great in the mud.  We have extreme thick stuff down here and there was never a time my tires wouldn't spin... granted I never put anything bigger than a 27" tire on mine.  My buddy ran 28" laws on his and never bogged it down either.  My only beef with my rubi was the ride and it's slow compared to the big bores.  That bike needs IRS and I would buy another one.  Great bike from my experience.  Here is a pic of a little hole that my rubi went through and my buddy on his BF750 got stuck in.  Same tire on each bike.  His tires wouldn't spin.  The mud got so hard around the bike you could walk on it... thick stuff

In my experience, the Rubicon had trouble in deep mud due to the solid rear axle.  I was consistenly getting stuck in holes my buddy's on IRS bikes would walk through.  I always used Low in the mud...never tried ESP/1st.  On long trail rides, the Rubicon was a beating on my back.  With the IRS Outlander, I no longer hurt after a long day's ride and I get stuck MUCH less often.  Don't get me wrong, I loved my Rubicon but the Outlander suits my riding style better.

I was suggesting a Foreman over the Rubicon as there are less things to go wrong with the Foreman.  Just my opinion.

Getting old is right...my back would hurt for days after a weekend of trying to keep up with the IRS bikes on the Rubicon.  AND, I totally agree with you on putting IRS on a Rubicon.  Ultimately, I'd like to see Honda produce the Rincon with the Rubicon transmission.  Until then, I"m verry happy with my Can-Am.

A side by side may be my next purchase.  It's impressive to see what a properly set up Rhino can go through!

i agree the rubicon is great in the mud. stay with a 27" tire though. always use low esp 1st. you have to go esp. the cool thing bout the esp though is that you dont have to let off the throttle to shift. i had both and i liked the rubi. it was the best of both worlds! but no honda will compare to the can-am 500. its badddd.
