Id recommend the 30-06 because you cant go wrong with a 30 Cal, but I would also consider the .243 I shoot one and they are impressive, they will make any animal besides a bear sit down. Use the right kind of Ammo with a .243 and you wont need another gun because you have a .300

.270 is the best shooting rifle i've ever layed my hands on and the new .270 WSM cartridge is suppose to be just as good as the old .270 accuracy wise with more knockdown power.I'de look into a .270 they are so sweet.

If your wanting to go with the Rem. 700 model, buy the black synthetic and stainless barrelled 25-06, man that will be the best money you have ever spent on a rifle, I bought one for my dad for father's day and we swapped rifles this last weekend, hit a nanny in the neck at 60 yeards and dern near blew her head off, guns amazing, no kick and got PLENTY of knockdown power

I would get a 700 series not the 770's just my opinion but a 243 is a good round for most game and you have a 300 already so you should be fine

like arkansas brute said... a .25-06 is an awesome round!  But IMO i'de go with either a 25-06 or a 7mm remington magnum.

I prefer the 7mm cartridge but the 25-06 would definately be my second choice.  then a .270... then .243

on down the line I'de choose a 300 mag... and last in line would be a .308

I would seriously consider the .243 They are a perfect deer round, quite, just about no recoil and are light and cheap. Buy a good round with them and you will have yourself a deer killing machine.

can't go wrong with a .270,the 7 mag is nice but you already have a .300 mag you said so the .270 would be perfect..243 is nice but I like a .270 because it shoots so flat and has a good punch.I'de go with a.270WSM then I'de get a 7 Mag. then a 25-06 or 30-06

I'VE READ SOMEWHERE THAT THE 270 WSM HAS ABOUT THE SAME BALLISTICS (TRAJECTORY/KNOCKDOWN PUNCH) THAT A 7MM MAG HAS.  I PERSONALLY DO NOT HAVE ONE BUT A GOOD FRIEND OF MINE DOES.  I HAVE A WINCHESTER M70 IN 300 WSM AND I LOVE IT.  I KILLED A SPIKE AND A DOE YESTERDAY WITH MY BROWNING BAR 270.

i just dun like the .308... if I was gunna go with a .30 cal I'de go for a .300 or .300 wsm WAY before the .308

many people say its the best round out there..... when you compare a 300 to a 308 your using the same bullet with more speed and energy on the same balistic coefecient just a flatter trajectory with the 300.... so why use a .308 when your gunna end up with better results with a 300?

A .308 doesnt shoot very far lol. But I like them because of the lower recoil then the .300. We have pretty much every cal and my favorites are the .243, .30-06, .300, and .308. Ill tell you what we have.

Three .300's
Two .30-06's
Two .308's
Two .270
One 7MM
One .243
One .223

And about 6 little plinkers.

another vote for the 1/4 bore 06'. you don't need another 30 cal. and don't need another belted magnum. the .25-06 is simply amazing...............shoots flat........recoil is nill........and hits like a ton of bricks. i also love the .22-250 for a great all around cartidge as well. as far as rifles go there are alot of winners out there, you just need to find what feels good to you.

problem is around here is its illegal to use a .22 cal on government property... which most people don't hunt forresty land but they do offer some nice wildlife if you want to drive to it.  I don't think that law spans to private land... but I dun see a problem with using a .22 cal if you know how to.

a .308 is one of the most widely used rounds out there... they shoot pretty good to about 400 yards... after that its like it has a monkey on its back... but it still shoots true to 1000 yards however you may have to aim 40 feet above the target.

I recommend a 7mm-08. I've had this rifle since I was 11 years old and I'm 29 now. I love this gun. I've shot a deer as far as 210 yards. My dad bought me this gun and everyone else was shooting 30-06's at the time. After I had mine for 3 years, everyone in my family is not shooting the 7mm-08. I also use ballistic tips and good lord will they bleed when hit with one of these.

Iam not trying to put you down or anything, but 210 yards is that far at all. Around here thats actually pretty close. People usually shoot easily 250 nowadays. With these high calibers range isnt a problem.

what about If I need to take a shot at 400 yards?  We hunt in open feilds a lot. And mybe evan 500 yards. we take 2 rifles and both shot at the same time so if we just wound it one of them will kill them most the time.. I just wont to go by my self sometimes.

if your gunna be shooting up to 500 yards I'de recommend going to a 7mm or larger.... probably go with the 300 mag.

I'm going by some referances of prarie dog hunting but the guy only recommeds shooting the small calibers out to 400 and some to 500 on small targets.... and recommends 7mms and the 300 for longer range big game.

What are you planning on doing with this new gun? I'd think about the price of ammo if you are buying a gun to shoot.  $50.00 for a box of shells sux, and it is only going to get worse in the future.

My dad just got the browning a-bolt in the 270 short mag caliber... awesome gun... love it.  I do quite well with my remington 700 308... It's a slim chance for me though to get a shot over 300 yards.  My next purchase is going to be a strictly deer rifle... I'm looking into a 243, a 25-06 and a 270... I haven't decided which one I want yet

I know 210 yards is not that far for some people but where we hunt it's not very often you can see that far much less shoot one that far. We hunt mostly bottoms and pine thickets. But, I didn't see where they were asking about a gun that they could was great at over 500 yards or whatever. In my opinion the 7mm-08 would do fine over 300 yds but I can say that I've done it. 90% of the deer we kill are within 175 yards.
