Hey there Guys, i was just thinking of re locating my rad, just wondering if anyone has pics or comments on how to do it. should i be able to do it with the front rack and plastics on and how do i dosconect the hose and not loose all the coolant and last question does it need to be on any type of angle when re located.

There are pic of a bracket for the radiator in my sig that you can make. yes you can leave all your plastic on if you want to and you will have to refill the radiator when your done because i dont think there is no way to keep the fliud from emptying out. you can put the radaitor at any angle you want to or lay it flat, you will just need to be able to stand it up and down when you fill it so it gets full and gets the air out..

yes the hoses are run threw the same middle panel, i made them long enough that i can stand it up so run can take off the cap and fill it easy. The hose is 7/8s its hard to find in some towns (dont no why) so i used 3/4" hose and pushed it on but some have used 1" hose with no problems.
its really pretty easy to do once you figure out how you want to mount it...

I sure its really easy, I never really liked the look myself but Im tired of overheating and blowing fan fuses. so I guess I'm going to do it soon. From what everyone says its the best thing you can do to your quad!!

I will say this,I did not want to put mine on the rack i had a nice box for my front rack and liked it there BUT once you start haveing your quad get hot all the time it gets to be a real pain to keep the radiator clean. Once its on the rack you will have no more worrys about you bike running hot mine never runs over 180* anymore...

I used GWC's as a guide and built mine alittle different but same theory. The weekend before I raised mine to the rack, I was stopping every 20-30 minutes for about 30-45 minutes to cool back down so I could ride without the temp indicator blinking at me. Now, it is clean and even after riding all day its still pretty clean but most important the radiator is still clear of mud and doesnt overheat!
If you are having trouble finding 7/8" hose ( I did) special order it from O'reillys (or any auto parts store) And if you are in or close to Jacksonville, O'reillys still has about 25' laying around in stock

One more question do you weld the bottom mount on or bolt it. I'm sure it would work either way but what would you recommend?

how hard is it to relocate a radiator on oil cooled engines?

oil cooled engines dont have a radiator, they have an oil cooler. On my H1 it has both and they are in a bracket of sorts so both went up. If a 400 is like the oil cooler on an H1 then you just need to get some cooler line from an auto parts store and replace your lines with the new hose and buy 4 hose clamps (small). The oil line hose is readily available. You will have 2 hoses about 3-4' long. BTW on the Foreman I had before it had 2 oil coolers and I didn't need to raise them since it never overheated. I also don't know if there is a fan on the 400 but if there is, you do not want to raise it since its an air/oil cooled engine the fan pulls air through the oil cooler and also blows on the engine. You would lose over half your cooling ability. IMO

thats what i meant, oil cooler, as much as i go through just plain mud, i have to clean it out all the time but it does have a fan on it so it is oil/air cooled. it makes since to leave it where it is i didn't even think about that. what if i moved it up and put another fan on a switch down around the front of the engine or would it just kinda defeat the purpose of relocating the oil cooler?

My bottom frame is 2" angle, but the risers are 2" flat as is the crossbrace. Otherwise its the same design. I first made it out of 1" square tubing but later scrapped that model and just copied GWC's design.

Ya you got the idea-- I used GWC's design-- which bike do you have?  Assuming you don't have an H1 cuz you never asked about the oil cooler.  Lowes carrys  the 7/8" hose.  best mod you can do to keep that motor cool.

If you are talking about this pic then the two tabs are what the bottom of the rad sit on.

I would make sure to put a piece of rubber like a tire intertube or something like that between the tabs and the rad.

Ok so how that frame is sitting there is how it would sit on the front rack then, and is the rubber so it does not bounce or rattle, and how is the top of the rad connected to the bracket. ??

I think it might be possible to mount the radiator under the rack and not lose anything...I have looked at it before but not recently.  I think it would require raising the rack 1-2"s and maybe cutting out one of the cross pieces but could be done...I will look at it more closely when I get back to my bike this weekend!  It'd sure beat losing all practical usage of the front rack...

Someone needs to look into making some speedrack boxes/attachments that sit beside the radiator mount and make use of that part of the rack...Then again, I could go your route GWC.

Then again, I go deep enough now on a consistent basis that if it was mounted horizontally under my rack I'd still be worried about clogging it up!

We put rubber under our rads in our racecars to keep it from rubing a hole in it along with helping out on vibration. It bolts at the top, you can see it in the other pic GWC posted near the top of this topic.

My design is similar to GWCs. I just fabbed the frame where the rad would be at a 45 degree angle. The bottom plate is at the same angle with two holes drilled for the stock rubber grommets. The radiator has two pins that stick out on the bottom. Press the grommets into the holes on the bottom of the new radiator mount. Then press the radiator pins into the grommets. The top just bolts up to your risers. I believe the top mounts have rubber grommets as well. I'm speaking from an H1 perspective. I had an extra thermostat laying around with the proper stock connectors...so I just made a pigtail to extend the stock wires to the fan. I used 3/4" hose as well, which is more readily available. Use a heat gun to warm up the hose ends to ease installation. Make sure you use good oil line hose and not fuel line or any other rubber that's not oil and temp resistant. Fuel line will gum up and deteriorate with age. LATER....
