Rear Diff - 11/17/2008 8:03:35 AM

I was riding yesterday and pulled back up at the house and noticed the rear diff was smoking. It was scorching hot and the right rear axle had slid out half an inch. I put it up and I'm going to check it out this afternoon, but anyone have any ideas on what may be wrong? There was no noise that could be heard while driving, even while creeping along.

Thanks for any help

Chris

OK, drained the rear diff oil today and it was clean and everything still turned freely. I took the axle off and popped in back it, but rode the brute 20 feet and it popped back out. Any ideas?

There is a ring on the end of the axle the sits in a groove. When the axle slides into the diff it catches and hold the axle in place. Check that first and see if it is missing. I don't know what is generating the heat? Especially if it was full of oil? If the inboard joint was hot then your axle joint might be damaged or lost the grease? Good luck!

The ring on the end of the axle is still on..... That was the first thing I checked.

Is the inboard CV broken? Try sticking your axle back in and see if you can still yank it out with it still in the bike? The splines look ok? With the axle out of the diff can you feel anything in the diff thats loose or broken?Splines in the diff look ok?Any lift on the bike? Are you sure you put it all the way back in? If your rear diff is bad it will be the first one I have ever heard of but its possible.

if the rear diff is bad, i just so happen to have one for $100 shipped, LOL!

i havent heard of many people busting them either, i have seen the lock nut back off on the pinion gear and let it eat the **** out of the ring gear though. but i cant remember if that was a front or rear diff that happened to...but that could cause some heat?! haha!

OK, I figured it out.... I friend of mine changed a boot for me the other day and when he put the axle back in, he put the knuckle on upside down.

the knuckle did that?  i flipped my knuckles a long time ago because the bottom side is about 3/8" taller, so it gave me a little extra GC in the back (every bit counts, right?).  Its hard to beleive that the knuckle was causing your diff to heat up and the axle come out..
