Some of my riding group went to a new play area with bad mud holes ( I was not there - went to a graduation).  We all have 400-500 class quads.  They should have known better when they saw 700+ class machines with relocated radiators and serious lift playing in the same area.  We are all still new to the ATV world.
anyway.....

One of my group saw a 750 go up to his rack and he decided to go around and ended up hitting a lop-sided rut and the bike went down and sideways.

From what I was told it died and even worse he tried to restart it a few times.  They dragged him out and he had muddy water in the oil (his words).  I don't know what happened next and why the group did not tow him back or stay with him but he ended up DRIVING it back to his truck about 3 miles on a paved road so he may have driven it fast. (although fast -- slow who cares it was still full of water/mud)

Of course it is smoking now.  He drained the oil out 7 times by now.  It is clean and it runs fine except for the smoking (oil smell).  I did a compression check on the motor and it is right on spec.  It runs fine and strong but it smokes.  I cleaned the spark plug (spark plug cleaner ) until it looked new.  I had him run it for about 100 yards or so and I pulled the plug.  It has oil on it.   I can do a leak down test but I want to have realistic expectations.

He keeps thinking that maybe it will work itself out but I do not think that it will.  On my old trucks that were smoking if the compression was good then it was usually valve stem seals.

Ok...  finally to the question part.

Am I delusional thinking that since the compression test was right on spec that the rings are OK?

Could it be as simple as changing out stem seals?  Even thou changing rings can't be that bad either.

Oh the bike is the same as mine so I have a service manual.  2007 Honda Rancher 420 ES (2X4  ).
Poor fellow just bought it used and has not even made a payment on it.  He wants to take it somewhere to get it fixed but I don't want him to tell the shop not to change the rings based on the compression test.  He says that when/if he can get it fixed that he will not even take it out when the humidity is too high.

Any other thoughts or ideas?

EDIT:  WOW  Sorry for the long post.  I was trying to be through.

the oil ring will wear out faster than the complression rings, the oil ring is shot.  go ahead and tear it apart and put in a new piston and rings and clean it very well.  this is where the sport gets expensive.  if you don't do this then later you will have more problems

Thank you everyone for the input.

I told him that we needed to do a ring job but he already took it to a local mechanic who told him that the crank shaft was grooved and that the motor needed to be re-built.  $2000.  I told him that that just did not sound right and to pick up his bike ASAP.  He took it to another shop that he used before but was further away to get an opinion on the crank shaft.

They told him that it looked fine and showed no wear.  He would need to bore the jug out .25 over and get matching over sized rings, piston, wrist pin and two pin clips and a top end gasket set.  Parts at Ron Ayers with a few extra bolts , etc (unrelated)... approximately $155.00 + $40 or so for a bore job.

Does this sound complete for a top end job?

Thanks again everyone for the help.

BTW... does Ron Ayers sell OEM parts are are they aftermarket?  We will try the local dealer first is the prices are not too much higher.

Yeh about $150 is what your looking at parts. I pay $50 to get my jug bored out so thats a good deal.

Just to let everyone know.  Yes it was fixed.  He took it to an older machinist that he knew.  He bored out the jug and put in a 'sleeve' and machined it to the original specs (according to the service manual).  New piston, rings and associated parts and he was up and running with no more smoke.  Thank you all for the help.
