If the battery does not have enough volts it will not engage in 4wd seems a lot of people have had this problem hook it to a charger and and see what happens then. Also is takes like 3500 RPM or something like that before the rzr starts charging the battery. If this is the case tell him to upgrade to a oddysey 925 battery, I had zero problems with mine and it fits in the stock holder just have to mount it sideways.

Voltage maybe but it could be a broken cage or the ring gear out of alignment. I know mine was on again and off again. Found out it was the ring gear was sliding over and allowing the cage to move away from the armature plate. Took it apart to find this.

02sleeper, is that in the tranny itself or in the front end.  Noticed Mine would not go into 4wd in reverse this weekend as well and I just got it  back from a tranny overhaul from the dealership within the last couple of weeks.  They are saying its a faulty gear indicator switch that's not allowing it to sense that it is in 4WD.  Any thoughts on this?

If its mechanincal I would say its the dif. Did you run the diagnostics on it for codes. The speedo will tell you if its reading. Actually is the 4wd indicator coming on when in reverse? If it is not then its electrical (gear switch). On mine the 4wd showed to be active but had no 4wd.
I know dirty fluiid will cause a lot of the same symptoms.
