HI, everyone. Im new to the forum. little background Im from south Mississippi I started wheeling back in 82 with a 185s, through the 90's I owned mostly sport quads.. Mojave, Banshee, Warriors, etc. I also had a new 97 Honda 300 4x4. Well I have not owned a quad since 2000 and just purchased a 98 honda 300 4x4 from a friend about a week ago for 700 dollars and a case of bud light. the bike runs like new and looks great but the rear bearings went out and he just went and bought a new 700 Griz. Well im just kind of old school and remember how indestructible these old tanks are. ANYWAY on to my question... I have a mechanic friend from the local Yamaha shop who is willing to rebuild the rear end for me but i hear they just continue to give u problems and the best thing to do is just purchase a whole new diff. The Honda shop locally says they have a new design replacement for the old 300 that is better about leak protection but i would be looking at almost 700 for it. I have the rear end pulled out and on the ground it looks pretty bad... should I go ahead and let my mechanic friend try and rebuild mine and try to save some bucks? or go ahead and just bite the bullet and replace the whole unit? again I say the bike is bulletproof and in GREAT shape otherwise. its worth fixen but i dont wanna spend more than i have to!

The '98 has the 'new' design ,,,,, and the difference is the seal,,,, has an extra 'lip' on it and a big washer plate,,,, you can get new rear diffs off of ebay for $500 or a complete rebuild kit, including main gear and pinion, for about $250-$275,,,,

^ correct. Mine is/was foobared when I got it, and some JB weld and $70 ebay bearing & seal kit has lasted for 3 or 4 months. My case is hurt, thus it wasn't worth going any further for me. It was either the bearing kit and let it ride a while, or a complete new diff. - It's just recently developed an occasional "clunk" which I'm told is likely my pinion bearing. No big suprise, but I've been accumulating parts to build an independent rear suspension set-up. So far, I'm not going to be into that for much more than the cost of a new rear diff.

JB Weld,,,,, gotta love it,,,,,,

Yes sir!  - The case was mostly gone where the pinion support needle bearing goes in.....Can't say yet that that isn't where my clunk is, but it held for over 3 months of some very abusive riding. I also had a hole in the bottom and a crack around the transition from where it covers/holds the ring gear to where the pinion is. Plus, the gears themselves had had some trash go through them. I figured spending more than the $70 would have been a waste verses just getting a complete new one.  - IRS here I come!

...the bike runs like new and looks great but the rear bearings went out...

See!  You should have thrown in a case of beer instead of insulting him like that.

You have a big dilema on your hands.  If the cases are OK, the differentials rebuildd as good as new.  They OK at keeping out water and muid, but the newer ones are not the best sealed differentials out there.  The old ones were a step below that.

So, what do you get?  A rebuilt "good as new" differential that is still not that great at being waterproof.  Or a brand new "good as new" differential that is still not that great at being waterproof.

Hmmm.
IMHO, the best answer might to be to let your friend's experienced eye have a look at the guts of this differential and see just how bad it is.  If it can be good as new, I'd probably do it were it mine.  Dollar for dollar a complete rebuild kit doesn't have to last as long as brand new, but if it is truely "good as new" then it will last that long.  Being in the business, our friend may also have insight on the "dollar for dollar" comparison based on the actual condition of the parts that you bring to him.
If there's damage or wear so that it can be made functional but it can not be made "good as new", your decision just became easier.  A lot more expensive, but a lot easier.

And another thing,,,,, go ahead and order extra seals for the diff and rear brake can,,,, bout $7-$9 each,,,,, keep them around and when you notice water in the diff or the can, change the bad seal,,,, takes about 30 minutes,,,, best insurance you can have to keep a diff working right,,,,

how bad is it to take apart the rear diff?  i just found out my rear diff is NOT water/sand proof.  what use to be oil is now a mixture of oil, water, and alot of sand, and this is all from one hole.  and that "gunk" will not just drain out of the diff, so i think my best bet to clean it out is take it apart and replace all seals, and i thinkin bout changin the bearings while im in there.  also, does anyone know of a cd version on a service manual.  id rather have a cd copy than a book copy.

Rear diffs aren't that difficult,,,, IF you don't do the pinion,,,,, axle bearings and seals are a snap,,,, the pinion takes special tools and a press,,,,

Then it'll be pretty simple,,,, you'll need to remove the rear axle,,,,, helps to have the book,,,,, first to take apart and then to go back together,,,,

yep,,,,, I have my local atv shop do my pinion bearings when needed,,,, if it's loose I'd have it done,,,, you don't want a lot of slop in the pinion,,,, it'll tear up the main gear and that's a lot more $$$$,,,,

For the price,,,, I use Clymer and I've never had a problem with it,,, there's a lot of guys that swear the clymer is crap tho,,,, I've been taking care of a pile of 300s with a clymer for years now,,,,
