I am having trouble with my new belt on my 2000 Polaris Sportsman.  After installing it, it began to slip- or it felt that way.  The odd thing is that the engine breaking system would also grab so hard it would almost throw me over the front.  When i removed the cover after only an hour or two the belt was ripped along the sides.  There is also a sound of loose metal coming from the rear pully.

My question is this, What may cause this?

I have heard that the pullies may not be alligned.  I have also heard that the center motor mount, if broken, may cause this.

I am not much of a mechanic, but am looking for any and all suggestions- especially if you've had this trouble before.

Thanks

Your clutch may not be closing up due to dirt or something.  That would cause it to eat the sides off the belt.
