Come on T, I know you know better . But to answer your question. Yes apply a switchable battery voltage to the coil assembly and hardwire the ground rathern then rely on the ground going through the system and it will work. if memory serves me correct it was the ground that ran through the speedo or other control systems. I would have to dig a manual out to make sure but I think that is why the awd doesn't work when the speedo goes out sometimes. Yeap, I just dug out the manual. Power runs from the awd switch to the coils then to the speedo then it goes to ground through the speedo. So try wiring up a hard ground first. The wire coming from the hubs goes to Pin E at the 6 pin (larger connector) on the back of the speedo. Some times the speed sensor (goes to the right front wheel) can cause awd engagment problems. Not every time but it has. Does the speedo log hours properly? If not then the fault is 9 time out of ten the speedo head itself. If it logs hours but the trip meter and MPH does not work then the issue may be in the speed sensor on the right wheel. It is located on the brake caliper bracket. The speedo head on these models is also the Hub engagment RPM limiter. The models that do not have a speedo use a seperate module to control the hub engagment rpm limiter. What this limiter does is not allow the awd to engage above a certain rpm. This is why the awd stops working sometimes when the speedo head goes bad.
