First real break in ride and comparison to HMF 06 800 and my 840. I took the 800R out yesterday to run it through its paces and make some comparisons with the 2 older 06' models we had on hand. The first thing I really noticed was how smooth and refined the 09 feels. The shifter is a lot smoother than they had been in the past. The guages as many of the 08 owners know are great improvement over the 06/07s, much easier to read especially when bouncing along the trail at high speed. The heat shields are improved under the seat as well. Excessive heat overall seems a little less noticable on the 800R, its not gone, but I think its been improved. The rest is about the same, great handeling, #1 world class ride, most comforatable seat there is on a quad, ect. ect. Now on to what I am sure everyone really wants to know, how was the power??? Its power is very respectable. Yet tame on the bottom and not quite as explosive like the 06-08s. You can seem to feel a little more pull coming from the 09 from say 35-55 in comparison to the 06 800, not a lot though. I was not really seeing the 9% gain in our drag races 300 or 400 foot runs, sorry but thats about all the room we have on our track to safley allow for shutdown distance. I would have liked to have been able to try 500-600 foot passes. Setups: The 09 as pictured above showroom stock except for the rims and the non XT 26" Carlile badland tires not the 6 ply ACTs normally found on a XT model, it still has its bumpers. The 06' 800 XT without bumpers, with 25" Bighorns on black Type 7 Rims and a slip on HMF pipe no TFI. With Cowtown clutch fingers. Bike is pictured below setup as it was yesterday. The 06' 840 as descibed in my Signature. Ran light weight OEM 4 ply type tires and light weight spun alluminum rims. The riders weights were 200 vs 280. 06 800 vs 09 800R: This comparison went 100% in favor of the 06 with the lighter rider Top, bottom, wherever it was pulling away. When we swapped and put the lighter rider on the 09' 800R, it was more a 50/50 with close finishes every time, no run aways here. Conclusion: The 06 was the faster machine oversll, even when switching riders, it was still right there every time hauling a heavier rider and an extra 5-10 pounds per corner in added rotating mass from the 6 ply Bighorns in comparison to the 4 ply Badlands. I think things will improve with a pipe that I will be adding to the 09 next week. How much improvement I would say the typical 10% that would normally be expected from a pipe. Should be achievable with the 09' as well. Will that be enough, not sure. The 06 has a pipe and 10 % more power than stock. The 09 was supose to have about 10% more power right out of the box, where the rubber meets the dirt, we were not able to see any evidence of that sort of improvement. I will be getting my base line dyno numbers hopefully this week, and get my pipe installed later this coming week and more dyno numbers the next week with the pipe. So I do plan to find out, I had done the same testing before and after with the both 06s and will be using the same dyno and the same dyno hard surface tires I have been doing all my testing with for the past several years. So the coming test should pretty acurate. I had my 840 there just play around with. The other 2 were not even close no matter wich one of us was riding which machines. It was runing pretty good. LOL
