I am looking to find a product (or homemade gadget that I can make) that I can carry with me and use to winch myself out of the mud when there is no tree around.  I found the xtractor from the link below but I can't tell if that works for mud or not.  Does anyone here use something for this use.  I always ride in a group but one day four out of five bikes were stuck (mostly trying to help each other out).  We had to daisy chain a few winches to the only bike that was near a tree (used his winch to anchor to tree).

this is somethin that my dad told me a long time ago

his question to me was how do you tie a horse up when there is nothing to tie to?
(my dad was a professional cowboy, he rodeod, traind horses, judged cuttings, and so on)

the answer is you dig about a 3 foot hole in the ground and you tie the lead rope to a good sized rock or a big bealt knife or something of the sort. you put the lets say knife in the bottom of the hole laying on its side and fill the dirt back in.  then you make shure that no matter what the horse can not pick staight up over the hole with a tight rope.

now how could we use that with 4 wheelers?

its simple.  build something like a x or a circle with a x in the middle of it that is maybe 8 inches in diameter.  then weld a loop in the middle of the x.  next you could weld on some maybe diamond plate or just sheet metal to fill it all in.  and then when you get stuck just dig a hole that is 8 inches in diameter and 3 feet deep and make shure its atleast 20 feet or so in front of you.  then drop in your recovery device, hook on your winch hook, fill in the dirt and winch away!

Cabelas has something like that. I believe it's called an Earth Anchor.

The military shovel is a great choice! If you drill a hole so it accepts a ring or hook it will work 90% of the time.  I had no tree to winch off one time and I was in **** land. I had a friend riding double and looped the winch to a nice tuft of grass and had him stand on top of it. Worked like a charm. Don't know what I would have done otherwise but if I had the shovel it would have saved lots of brainstorming.

Yep thats it. pull out your cable, set the anchor on the ground, step on it and hit the winch button. The pull of the winch digs the anchor in even deeper.

The anchor will work fine in those conditions, that's what it was made for.

we had a situation happen to us. Like the one described above. Everyone was stuck trying to help each other and nothing around to winch to. Luckily we were close bye to my buddys farm. We walked up to his shop and i started hunting. I found and old roof bolt and a small one handed sledge hammer. We took the roof bolt and drove it into the ground angled facing away from the atv. Hooked a winch to it. And all be dipped in (****) and rolled in bread crumbs. We were pulled right out

atv.     /        that was the angle we drove the roof bolt in. If its really bad, drive two in, or three or as many as you want. Now if you could make this practical enough to carry around with you it would be more helpful i'm sure

Wow, good information.  I may get me one of those mobile home anchors because they are cheap.  I think I am also leaning toward that Earth Anchor at Cabela's.  Not just for an anchor, but for flattening any rut that I may bottom out on. Shovel and anchor all in one.  http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0046151523082a&type=product&cmCat=SEARCH_all&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&Ntk=Products_liberal&QueryText=earth+anchor&sort=all&_D%3AhasJS=+&N=0&Nty=1&hasJS=true&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jsp.form23&_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1

Plus they just built a Cabela's in the Baton Rouge (Gonzalas, La) area,  hmmm and a Bass pro shop in Denham Springs, La... looks like I have some shopping to do.  :)

started using trailer anchor back in 1987 with my chevy 1/2 ton 4-wheel drive. worked many times. made a smaller(shorty) version for my big bear(irs) 400 and it has never let me down. even in an open field.

Me and some buddies have the same dilemma one day. There were three of us all about 20-25ft apart stuck wonderin who could come help us.We stood around for about ten minutes until my buddy came up with the idea of hooking up winch cables to each others bikes. It sounds simple but it just never crossed our minds that 2 stuck bikes could pull each other out. Stupid i know but just wasnt in our mindseat. But it works great cause one if not both of the quads r liable to come out. But 2 of us got out fine then we had to both hook up to the other guy cause both of our bikes would just slide ever with brakes locked.

The best solution I have found is to carry lots of winch rope extensions.
The earth anchor was not able to grab a hold in the mud at all.

Well I went to Cabela's today and found the earth anchor in the boat anchor section.  It was a bit bigger that what I would like to carry.  They did not have a big selection of those "flute" anchors (did I say that right?).  Those would look hard to get into the ground.  I did see a post about it digging down on its own so it is still worth a look at.  I am on my way to the Bass Pro shop and see what they have.  BTW:  do NOT bring your wife to Cabela's.  I bought more #@#@ fudge than I bought me toys.

I have seen similar products. The earth anchor looks lame. Not much grab. The first one looks much better, Since as it pulls it will dig on. The earth anchor looks like it will just lean towards the bike and pull out.

I have seen a fluke achor type unit in action. Works great. Tough to get out. but once out. Move around, and winch out out of the hole you winched it into, if you cant pull it out by hand.

I have a short piece of 3/16 inch chain on mine that allows me to pull it back out without bending it all up.  I also put a little bit of a bend in the shaft, so it looks a little more like a Pull Pal.  I have to say I don't use it nearly as much as I thought I would, since there's almost always someone or something to anchor to, but it has saved the day many times.

I disagree.  You have to work to hammer them in, but there's a very very easy way to remove them.  Just try to use it for self recovery, it'll come right out.

The same answer applies for just about anything.  Nothing is any stronger than what it's hooked into.  You have to be realistic in your expectations, you have to know that you WILL run into a situation that can foil any device ever made.  But in general, the "self digging" type anchors including the fluke style boat anchors seem to do very well in soft ground.  Peanut butter?  You'd better hope there's a bottom...

Try using an axle shaft from a junkyard. Cheap and effective. We used them in Murphy N.C. when no anchor points were available.
