I flooded my bike (in sig) yesterday at mud creek and I need some help. Had a bad spot in my snorkle. Is there a better way to get the water out of the motor than changing the oil over and over until it clears up? I have heard deisel fuel and a few other things. I changed it a few times and it is getting darker but it still has a ton of water in it. Also, It is smoking pretty bad. Is that just due to the water or do you think I might have burned the rings or something?

Thanks

Robert

i wouldn't use any diesel it robs the engine of lubricants, but if you do-do not crank it. there is marvel mysery oil and sea foam but if its already smoking then the damage is probably done. its most likely the rings that are burnt. i'm not really sure on anything about the rings other than how to change them. i would either take it apart and bring it to a mechanic have them check it out, unless you got the know how to fix it. then go from there. just make sure that you change the oil cooler, or clean it out really, really, really...........good make sure you get all of the dirt/sand out of the bottom of tha crank case

I am afraid that you are right aout the rings. I was hoping that it was just blowing by them because the water thinned the oil out. I haven't gotten a chance to talk to anyone that has flooded one out so I wasn't sure if that was normal or an indicator tht I did some damage.

did the same thing with my brute put some oil in the cylinder to help lubricate the top ring this will help in freeing the rings up also it will smoke for a while but as long as you didnt run it to long before you changed the oil you should be ok ....On another subject does anyone know if there are any aftermarket oil cleaners for atvs like the amsol or similar would be a good investmate for mud riders like ourselves

If you rode it afterwards and it started smoking I believe you have killed your rings. Hopefully you did not kill your bearings. A good rule of thumb is if you sink it dont crank it until you clean it.

08Brute
You will get a better response if you make a new thread for a new subject. What do you mean by oil cleaners? Are you talking about oil filters?

buy a few gallons of the cheap oil and like 5-6 oil filters and change and change and.... well you get the idea. change 2x per filter,  gradually increasing the run times between changes till all signs of water are gone. EX: change 1&2 run for aprox 2 1/2min. put new filter, 3&4 5min. new filter etc. etc.  As for the smoking, white or blue? did you drain the exhaust? thatll smoke(steam) for a while. undo the oil cooler and put some air to it to flush that out good. after like the 6-7th or more oil change get the good stuff and a new filter. And diesel will not hurt it as long as you dont run it more than a minute, diesel has a good amount of oil in it, it is actually a pretty good lube.

It is a frusterating and  sometimes costly thing to rid an atv of ALL water.

I looked at it after I got it out of the hole and once I realized it was milky I stopped running it. I am pretty sure I burned the rings. I have fixed all the other problems and it still smokes like a fogger truck. I don't have the know how (never tried) to tear into the motor and replace the rings and my local shop said it would be around $500 to replace the rings. I am basically screwed. I guess the old saying is right. Gotta pay to play.

If you don't have the proper tools to measure and hone the cylinder, don't do it.  Do not install new rings into a used cylinder without first measuring and cleaning the cylinder up first.

That is not even something that I would attempt. I am just going to have to shut up and pay the money.

Yea it's a 50/50 chance really.  I've sunk my Grizzly probably 8 times now.  It's just now starting to lightly smoke.  I'll run it till it lets go then rebuild it.
