I haven't rode my bike much lately but i was on it yesterday bc I put new rims and tires and a lift kit. It didn't seem to want to run right but I figured it was because it was cold. It was backfiring quite a bit. Well today I went out to start it and it wouldn't start. It acted like it was getting too much fuel. I took out the fuse to the fuel pump and it fired up and then the battery died. I have a HMF pipe, Twin Air Filter, and A Dynatek FI Controller. I assumed the FI Controller was giving it too much fuel so I disconnected it and put all the wires back factory. Now i'm not sure is it okay to jump it with my car or what exactly I need to do. Also maybe what might be the cause for it not wanting to start. Thanks

if you can get a battery pack and boost it, that would be best, another atv will work as well, a car will work but don't leave it on there to long as the car alternator puts out enough current to overload the battery. However, for a short period it is ok...

Jumping it with a car is more than OK, AS LONG AS THE CAR IS NOT RUNNING!!! You don't need a running car to jump an ATV. You will fry the Zener diode in the reg/rec adn ruin it.

You might have water in the tank. I would sphion the fuel out and get some new fuel. When you think you got all the fuel out poke the hose around and blow on it to see if you missed any fuel.

I appreciate the help guys. I went out this morning and it spun over a couple of times and fired right up. Battery sounded kind of low on juice. Well I checked the voltage and it was charging at like 13 volts. I rode it for maybe 30 mins to try and charge up the battery and checked the voltage while it was still running and it was at the same 13 volts. Cut the machine off and checked it and the battery was sitting at like 12.0-12.2. So i'm not sure what it should be charging at but I assume it should be more than 13 volts.

Locate your voltage regulator ~ its on the left side of the bike sitting on the bike about knee height, then look for the black wire with the white tracer going to the plug ,splice another wire onto that one and ground it to the motor then start the bike and see the difference in the voltage it should be around 13.8 -14.6 volts. Not sure if you noticed or not but if you rev the engine up with the voltage you have now you will see that the voltage actually drops even ferther especially if you turn on any lights (check it out).

So is it safe to leave it like this? Or are you saying just to check it out?

The manual specifies that the quad should have the key in "aux" when testing voltage and be at 5000 rpm. That means all three lights are on, and the quad is revving pretty high (6800 redline on the 700). At that rpm it should be between 13.5-15V. If you're lucky like me it will show under 13, and your battery will be perpetually dead, and you'll carry jumper cables with you so you can boost off everyone else when you park the quad... I haven't tried splicing that ground wire yet, but it's supposed to help. Some Kings have this problem, some don't. With a new battery normally the charging voltage will be a bit higher, around 13.2 or so. As the battery ages the charging voltage will go down to about 12.7V which is just above where the battery should be in a resting state. The Vinnie uses the same battery and doesn't seem to have issues. I don't know if it is just a bunch of bad voltage regulators, or just a bad ground, I'll have to try out splicing that wire but haven't had the time yet. Either way it's a stupid design flaw that still hasn't been corrected. There's nothing wrong with the charging systems as to their output, just for some reason sometimes the voltage is a bit low.

All the typing and I never answered your question. As far as I know, the low charging voltage will just eventually kill your battery, or at least shorten it's life. It shouldn't hurt the machine. The biggest thing is you'll lose reliability in it always being able to start.

My pops KQ700 would let you jump it, but then it would die right away, battery was dead, wouldn't take a charge, to me this sounds like the problem. a battery below 12.4v is dead. at 12.4v it is only 75% charged and 12.6v it is fully charged. I bet there is no way on your battery to check the electrolyte(acide)?

mister david suzuki, if you rev it up to voltage will go down? Sounds odd to me, maybe I don't fully understand these KQ(limited time working on them) That wire that is supposed to be spliced to ground, where does it normaly ground to?Heck if someone could get me the wiring diagram I'd like to print it for my ole man...

I guess basically my question is do I need to splice that ground and leave it like that? I wasn't sure whether david zuzuki was saying just do this to try it or to leave it like that. Thanks everyone.

I think I saw a thread on this topic (ground wire) by david suzuki on another site. It dealt with getting a better ground for charging the battery. He meant to leave it like that (new better ground).

Cointoss, I "think" the reason that the voltage goes down is because of the way it's designed. I think it feeds both the ignition and charging system with power, and as revs increase the load of the ignition "steals" power from the charging system. Then here's the curveball that kind of doesn't get along with that theory. If you ever had an old quad/bike with few electronics and electric start you could run them without the battery. With battery in the headlights bet brighter with revs, with no battery the lights almost go out with revs and are bright at idle.

Ok guys ,yes after you splice the wire leav it / it's ok your battery will agree~as far as the voltage droping as you rev it up/ that's because the engine draws more power from the system as the RPM's increas (just try it and see) Did lots of them and nobody has complained as of yet its safe. Told my local dealer about this they told me i was crazzy, they must have tryed it because he called me and asked me how i figured this out~told him your the mechanic figure it out your self just send the cheque in the mail (thanks) so there you have it.( just look behind the plastic on the left hand side sitting on the bike inside of your knee thats where you will find it) i sugest you salder it do it right once. keep your stick on the ice .
