Ok heres the deal... My 07 rincon has about 450 miles and around 115 hrs. with only one oil change. I know it has to have some water and crap all in it. And its been rode hard... Whats the best way to get my engine in tip top condition? Whats the best oil...? Ive heard stick with honda, then Amsoil, and even heard to use rotella... How about any additives to get it clean and then keep it clean???

I have Amsoil 10w-40 in my Rincon. I also ran it in my old grizz for 4500 miles, GOOD STUFF! I have never used any additives so i can't help you there.

The addatives you seek are already in the oil...  (note that I didn't pick a brand before I said that.)

GN-4 is good stuff, so is Valvoline 4 stroke.  Change the oil if you're concerned about it, and enjoy the machine.

I wouldn't use any sort of additive, especially PTFE or Molly.

HP4 would be a good choice, along with a Honda filter.  You probably also want to adjust the valves.

I use Royal Purple 10w40 full syn. I haven't had any trouble and it lasts forever. Also, Lucas is some very good oil also. I wouldn't use any additives because it says that certian additives will affect your clutch operation. Look in your service manual or the little book that came with the bike. It will tell you what standards and classes of oil to use and not to use.

My Honda dealer said to never use Rotella. He told me that it leaves  a film inside the engine. He told me this about one of his customers bikes that he had to tear down the bike. I use the GN4 oil and haven't had a problem yet.  For as often as you are supposed to change the oil I figure it is a good thing to stick with the Honda stuff.

gn4. i used that. make sure to get a new oil filter or buy the HL oil filter. run cheaper oil through to get water out. then add the correct amount of oil. HL has the oil add as well. while your at it. check your spark plug. see if you need a new plug. cant hurt to check real quick. also gear case oil. i changed all my oils every 100 miles. i had no probs even at 3k miles. then i sold my 03 foreman.

I wouldn't use rotella either since it is a Diesel Motor Oil. I use GN4 or Castrol GTX. I've been told to never use Synthetic oil due to it can make your gears slip, at the same time I don't see how adding a lil bit of Lucas would hurt. That stuff is amazing.

GN4 is best IMO, next would be amsoil according to its rep (I haven't personally used it).  I've used Valvoline and Castrol's ATV specific stuff and it worked w no ill effects.  NO ADDITIVES EVER!!!

A lot of people overlook the fact that the requirements of a motorcycle/atv engine are different than a car engine. The gears inside the atv tranny shear oil molecules pretty bad, also most cars don't have wet clutches either. I like mobil1 full synthetic 4 stroke atv/motorcycle oils because they are specifically made to handle wet clutches and tranny gears, IMO its the best out there.

Those are smaller items in my book.  The transmission really isn't as hard as you'd think on the oil.  The wrong oil can be hard on the clutches though.  The absolute biggest thing for me...  ATV engines are filthy, loose jointed contraptions by today's "car standards".  Newer oils are not designed for this environment whatsoever.  Your car probably should have the latest and greatest, or at least what was current when it was made, however in "car terms" an ATV motor is from the nineteen fifties.  Oils are backwards compatible, but it's just like Windows on your computer.  Technically backwards compatibility works, but somehow it's never quite right.

I'll agree with the recommendation, but not the reasoning.  a "film" is not from the rotella.  Rotella is a very good oil, but it's a very purpose built product.  People insist on it because they believe that oil comes in a "good, better, best" scale, so they use what the trucker's use since they get a million miles from their trucks.  The fleet I look after has millions and millions of miles on Rotella oils, I could get it for free, but I do not put it in my ATVs or my vehicles.  Actually I don't use it in the gas engines at work.  Not because it's not good.  It is excellent.  It is just misapplied.

Of course none of either reflection above means that the wrong oil is going to cause your ATV to self destruct.  This is a long term durability thing.  Sometimes VERY long term when you get into splitting hairs.

I dunno if I'd go that far.  Truth is, these little critters would run on Mazola oil for quite some time.  Heck, a good solid but well used ATV engine has been known to go half a day with the drain screw removed.  Of course anything's better than nothing and I wouldn't suggest that anyone HAS to use "top shelf" to get acceptable longevity or beter, but do set yourself at least some standards.

I've heard this a lot.  I'm just curious...  In my neck of the woods GN-4 goes for only very slightly more than a good name brand oil off of the shelf.  What do you (or anybody who's gotten it recently) have to give for the quart and/or gallon?

The GN-4 is up around 11 bucks a quart at the local stealership here in GA. I 100% agree with you on the wet clutch operation relative to oil used. That is why I like to specifically look for an oil that is designed with wet clutch use in mind. What oil do you like?

I like GN-4.  But certainly not eleven bucks worth.  I paid (i think) sixteen bucks for the last gallon I bought.  Maybe eighteen.  I got the oil and went across the road for coffee on the same twenty dollar bill...
Valvoline's ATV offering is a good one as well.  Very good.  I might place it above Honda's own in some particular applications, but as I've said before, information on this revision is not really readily available until several revisions down the road.  I'd use it if it were less expensive (or even close) but the last time I saw it in stock locally it was something like seven bucks and Honda oil was three and change.

I havn't dug into what retail is for GN4 these days, maybe I it's holdover stock at the dealer?  Maybe it's up in the last couple months, but at that time that was WAY over retail for the Valvoline four stroke.
Anyway, those are my recommendations.
