ORIGINAL: autosay97 A lot of people overlook the fact that the requirements of a motorcycle/atv engine are different than a car engine. The gears inside the atv tranny shear oil molecules pretty bad, also most cars don't have wet clutches either. I like mobil1 full synthetic 4 stroke atv/motorcycle oils because they are specifically made to handle wet clutches and tranny gears, IMO its the best out there. Those are smaller items in my book. The transmission really isn't as hard as you'd think on the oil. The wrong oil can be hard on the clutches though. The absolute biggest thing for me... ATV engines are filthy, loose jointed contraptions by today's "car standards". Newer oils are not designed for this environment whatsoever. Your car probably should have the latest and greatest, or at least what was current when it was made, however in "car terms" an ATV motor is from the nineteen fifties. Oils are backwards compatible, but it's just like Windows on your computer. Technically backwards compatibility works, but somehow it's never quite right. quote:
ORIGINAL: TheBlueDonkey My Honda dealer said to never use Rotella. He told me that it leaves a film inside the engine. He told me this about one of his customers bikes that he had to tear down the bike. I'll agree with the recommendation, but not the reasoning. a "film" is not from the rotella. Rotella is a very good oil, but it's a very purpose built product. People insist on it because they believe that oil comes in a "good, better, best" scale, so they use what the trucker's use since they get a million miles from their trucks. The fleet I look after has millions and millions of miles on Rotella oils, I could get it for free, but I do not put it in my ATVs or my vehicles. Actually I don't use it in the gas engines at work. Not because it's not good. It is excellent. It is just misapplied. Of course none of either reflection above means that the wrong oil is going to cause your ATV to self destruct. This is a long term durability thing. Sometimes VERY long term when you get into splitting hairs. quote:
ORIGINAL: 350rancherboy ...after warrentys up i THINK you'd be okay to run any oil really.... I dunno if I'd go that far. Truth is, these little critters would run on Mazola oil for quite some time. Heck, a good solid but well used ATV engine has been known to go half a day with the drain screw removed. Of course anything's better than nothing and I wouldn't suggest that anyone HAS to use "top shelf" to get acceptable longevity or beter, but do set yourself at least some standards. quote:
ORIGINAL: 350rancherboy gn4 is too high I've heard this a lot. I'm just curious... In my neck of the woods GN-4 goes for only very slightly more than a good name brand oil off of the shelf. What do you (or anybody who's gotten it recently) have to give for the quart and/or gallon?
