Hey all. Every year I need to buy new U-bolts to put my pushtube mount under the frame because every year I destroy the U-bolts from 4-wheeling with the mount still attached. It's definitely not worth the aggravation to take the mount off between plowing and riding. Until summer, of course, then it comes off. But the fact remains... I still kill my U-bolts during the winter!
So every winter I find myself like I am now, waiting for my dealer to get me 4 new U-bolts and 8 nuts. And it costs somewhere around $14. Question is this: what size U-bolts or where can I get them without going through Moose? It seems like a relatively easy piece to find but I've looked around at different stores around here and come up with nothing. Suggestions?

I would suggest taking one of your old ones down to a big hardware store, or tractor supply or welding/metal supply.  One of those should be able to help you out.  How about just taking your quad to a welding shop and having them fabricate some brackets straight to you quad...might make removing the mount easier and I'm sure they could weld something on a lot stronger, so that it would get torn up.

i'm looking to do the same thing. the stock moose u-bolts are weak. figured i take one to home depot and look for thinker ones. be nice if there was some kind of u-bolt that you could put up from the bottom to prevent dragging the bolt ends over rocks.

Here's a thought.  Works for me, but probably not for everyone, but give it some thought-

Install the mounting kit to the ATV with new original or upgraded hardware, and cut the U-bolts off at the nuts.
Stuff a 3/8 nut in between the plow attachment "ears" so they can't collapse.  Then thread a bolt through the nut, and lock it with a second nut on the inside.  Now the ears are "locked" into one large chunk instead of two prone chunks of metal.  Further protection (or different fitment options) could be made by cutting a small piece of flat stock at a different thickness, to the exact shape of the mounting ears, and just drilling for a bolt and a single nut.  Either way prevents the attachment points from being bent during "incidents".  Then, never remove the mount plate.

I'm not sure how the Moose system bolts up, but my Warn also uses u-bolts, except that they are "flipped" with the u-bolts running up from the bottom placing the nuts above the frame tube.

thats what i want to do is flip the u-bolt but do to the u bend it does not sit flush on the plate. i would need like a square u-bolt?

yeah jake that sounds good with running a nut between eyelets then running a bolt threw. will make it more solid but will make it more work to install and that sucks whens its freezing outside!

No, no.  Not every time.  In lieu of summertime removal.  In the winter, just leave it as you currently do.  At least that's what I do.  The added protection is so that you may let your nerves be at ease while you pummel the crap out of it without a second thought during the summer.

If you're going to "flip" the U-bolts so the nuts are up, you need something to protect the frame a bit.  That could probably be fabricated.  Since the only reason for the "U" is to protect your frame from single point contact (that would crush the tube), and you would have accomplished that goal with a purchased or fabricated piece, at that point you could simply use plain old standard grade two bolts.  (or better, don't go over grade five without mechanically locking nuts, as you can't torque them enough to make them stay put.)
For lack of a better description of the "frame protection", think of a muffler clamp.  Remove the U bolt portion, and picture just the saddle.  You could also use a piece of flat strap that was bent a bit to accomplish this.

I appreciate the ideas Jake. I'm still running the stock plastic "skid plate" if you want to call it that, so it comes off for the winter to put the plow mount on. What I would ultimately like to do is get full skid plate and just do some fabbing and mount ears just like the mount ones right on the skid plate! That way they're always there, just slide the plow on and go! I like your ideas about other protection though... Crossing RR tracks is what really beats the **** out of the plow mount. Otherwise I don't get too crazy with it.
