No idea what happened.  Has about 23 hours on it.  Was going to put it in my truck tonight to take it across town.  I opened the garage door and walked up to it and started it, ran for a sec or 2 just fine then I shut it off.  I then went to put the ramps on my truck and get the straps all ready.

Came back in and the thing would barely start.  Just started off running rough then got worse.  Now it sounds like a race car with open exhausts.  It hardly had enough power to get it into the truck.

The thing hasn't been abused and is bone stock down to the tires and the oil was changed recently.  Thank god I haven't started modding it yet.

Anyone deal with any dealerships?  I hear they have to be spotless clean when I take them in.  The thing looks spotless but this is my first time to bring anything like this in for warranty work.  Any hidden areas I should clean?  Frame rails or anything like that?  I notice the airbox is dirty/dusty inside it.  I don't want them dropping any dirt into my motor.

What do you guys think?

Joe

interesting, you'll have to let us know what they find

if the machine is clean, not all caked in mud, just take it in, they deal with dirty atv's all the time

Yeah will do, it's pretty spotless and only a month old, minus a few scratches even the underside is still shinny new.  Hope they don't try to jerk me around in anyway though.

before you take it in.. make sure your battery is connected good and you dont have a loose connection.. if your battery is lose it will cause you to trip the belt light and it will run like crap.. also make sure your cdi box is plugged in good.. i swapped boxes on my dads brute the other day and he went to get on it and the cdi box was not plugged in good and it made it run like it was on one cylinder... checked the plugs and it was loose.. plugged it back in tight and it was good to go.. since you had it started up and running it has to be something simple...

The belt light isn't on though.  But it would be cool if it was as simple as that.

It's running pretty raggedy.  I unloaded it earlier out of my truck and it wouldn't stay running without keeping it pretty throttled up.  Hard miss.

How could I get it out of limp mode if that was it?  Can I just unhook the battery?

That sucks.

I guess it'll be a good time to dielectrode grease all the connections this afternoon if I get a chance.  Can I grease all of them even the weatherpack ones like the gray and black connectors under the seat?

I'd grease everything you can find.  I did everything under the seat so far and actually had some nice green corrosion on one of the plugs (black wire prolly ground)... this is with 450 miles on it and it's never been in deep water.

That's the plan right now.  I wanna do that first because it needs to be done and I can check all the connections.  Then I'm going to do a compression test.

But right now I have one broken 06 Ducati, one broke 93 polaris, and one broke 08 Brute Force.  Plus my truck needs some maintenance.
I really feel like starting a huge fire after screwing with my street bike all afternoon

I'd just drop it off tomorrow and let the dealer sort out the brute, grease all connections when it's torn down to install the pipes IMO. Easier, plus you paid for a warranty let them fix it.

Oh and don't forget the dumptruck, two bulldozers, boat, tractors that need TLC, Z28, and a partridge and a pare tree.

I kinda feel bad for you now.. lol. Seriously grease it when you put the pipes on and the connections are all visible, take that sucker in.

Needs: Chain, sprokets, valve adj, belts, brakes.

I'm pissed because: the chain I bought was a link short even though that's what they specified.  so now i have to spend time getting another one.  and no one has front pads in.  from now on it'll only be harleys for me.

Mine had this problem right after I bought it.. Found that it had been over filled with oil and was coughing up oil into the airbox and carbs causing it to run on the 1 cylinder that wasnt completely doused in oil. It cleared itself up after burning off this oil, but I have been told that the dipstick on these read wrong and should not be filled to the full mark or it will cause the oil in the airbox problem..If yours wasnt smoking though it may not be this.. Mine wasnt constantly smoking when this happened, but it did for a few minutes when it first started.

Checked both didn't fix it but it's one thing I can scratch off the list.

Also I'm noticing if it sits for awhile it'll crank right up and run ok for about 20 seconds and start running like absolute poopie and die.  Pushing black smoke out the tailpipe and raw fuel.  When I crank it back up again it'll still be running like poop.

So I guess I'm gonna get it in one day this week or saturday morning.

Well I had a lot of good info there but I said the s word a couple times and it just gave me astricks.

Try restating it.  The word filter will *** those words everytime.  It's setup like this to retain the family-friendliness of this forum.

Mine had this problem right after I bought it.. Found that it had been over filled with oil and was coughing up oil into the airbox and carbs causing it to run on the 1 cylinder that wasnt completely doused in oil.

This can't/won't happen on EFI.  While the oil may get burped up into the airbox, it will not effect how a FI motor runs to any great extent.

OK Joe, this is what I would do.  When it comes to mechanical stuff, it is always best to start with the easiest possible problem and work your way backwards towards the hardest, which in this case would probably be washed rings.

  • Start by checking to see if you have fire to each spark plug.  If you don't, you need to find the culprit which is most likely the bad connection we were discussing earlier.  If you do, move on.
  • Check the POD for any error codes.  I'm unsure of the exact method of achievement on the Brute but can check it for you if need be(I have a repair manual).  If it shows nothing, move on.
  • Pull the fuel rails/injectors off the throttle body.  Plug the holes left in the TB's to keep from starting a fire.  Turn the motor over and check to be sure that both injectors are actually delivering fuel.  If they are, then move on.
  • Now you have to do a compression test on each cylinder...If none of the previous have been the culprit, you will have low compression in that cylinder.
  • Assuming that you DO have low compression in the cylinder, you need to do a leak down test to determine the culprit of the compression loss.  This is done by turning the motor over slowly and "feeling" the engine.  There will be "blowby" air in either the intake(intake ports), exhaust(exhaust ports), or crankcase vent(rings).  I'd start with the crankcase vent, as it will be the most likely culprit, and also the easiest to accurately diagnose on a twin cylinder.  From there, it's simply a matter of fixing whatever the culprit may be...
If that doesn't do it, then we will have to get creative in the diagnosis....
