My brute is snorkled, carb vents ran high, etc....is it really necessary to snorkel the exhaust ??? Id rather not do it if I dont have to. I am under the impression that as long as the engine is running it shouldnt matter but if it dies then the pipe cannot be under water. So am I correct or ????

Never try to start it if the pipe is under water

I start mine all the time under water. I do not purposly turn the bike off when the exhaust is under water, but sometimes things happen. it depends on the position of your exhaust valve when the bike dies. if the exhaust valve is closed when it dies under water then water cannot get on the top of the cylinder. if it is open and water does get there, you will know as soon as you try to start it.

but NO, to answer your question, I would not snorkel the exhaust.  you can see all of our vids on youtube and see we ride in the water all the time without exhaust snorkels.

I have no problems at all with my exhaust snork "trapping water".  I put it on there as a safety measure.  I paid too much for this bike to swamp it in the water.  Keeping on the throttle keeps the water out while riding wheelies.   Maybe you should give it a try before you knock it.

Well when you think about it.....it is simple physics, I mean we are speaking of a 400cc motor at around 3 maybe even 5k RPM water is not going to get in there with that kind of pressure escaping

What happens when a carb vent comes off and you're in 3.5 ft of water?  Happened to a friend a few weekends ago.  I can't take that chance.

Not to mention you lose alot of hp when your exhaust goes underwater. Keeping it out only helps. The water will restrict the flow.

mine died under water back in april.  Total bill was almost $1500.  thank goodness my warranty covered it all except my deductible.  I now have a rear snorkle and I love it.  I agree with the constant pressure but if it dies for whatever reason, your screwed.

Not entirely.  I've re-started my Grizz numerous times after stalling it in deep water before I had my exhaust snorkel.  As long as you catch it quick enough and get back on the button, most of the time you're good to go.

I like the idea of one just because after working through a hole past rack deep in the water and mud its just a little piece of mind if you get stuck or something shuts down. If you do a water wheelie you are not going to get water in the exhaust and if it dies in a wheelie you are not going to get near as much water in the exhaust when it pops back up out of the water. A little water traped is alot better than the river giving a constant supply of water.

Exhaust snorkels are about as effective as seals on the SRA Formemans... All they do is keep water in, not out.

Exhaust snorkle = unneccesary, imo.

Unless they don't let water in there in the first place, which is what a snorkel does.  Keeps water from getting in there.

you need to do what you want, if you want an exhaust then put one. I personally do not think it is necessary. my bike died in about 6' of water saturday and I reached down and cranked it up and rode out of the hole.
so those of you with them, how do you get it out if it does get in it and the bike dies??? All I have to do is stand the bike on its end and the water drains out.

Same thing fella.  Tip it up on it's end if needed.  But I've never had that problem.  Because I have an exhaust snork.

Well the water is not the problem its the dirt that comes with the water, most of these guys are probably running stock exhaust with spark arrestors and that catches the dirt. snorkle your exhaust imo.

I took my spark arrestor out.  That thing was clogged BAD.  I opened up the fins in there as well.  Redneck HMF, but it works great.

I have had one on my brute for a while and it has come in handy more than once. I will always have one. I have had water get into the motor before when my bike stalled out in deep water. I didn't have to rebuild but that could have easily went the other way. To each their own. Just do whatever you think will work for you.

Man with that hmf it is easy.  We have a place her in town called Construction Bolts.  Any type of fastener that you can imagine.  I took the tip off my hmf and they had a washer that was EXACTLY the same size as the base of that tip.  I took my bike and the washer to my muffler guy (does all the dual jobs on my trucks) and 45 minutes later I had what I wanted.  They took the tip and matched up the holes on the washer and punched them, then mad the bends that were necessary to get around my bumpers and came up about 4 inches above my head while sitting on the bike.  All one piece with no partial welds.  If I am going riding and not planning on going deep then I can just put my hmf tip on.  I attach mine with the same 3 bolts that come with the hmf tip.  The tip and an allen wrench also stay in my emergency tool box on my bike so I can change on the trail if necessary. I hope this helps you bc this rear snorkle has saved me some money.  BTW my muffler guy only charged me $40 and the washer was $1.
