I'm in the process of changing my tail light to something a lil more custom. Well I figured mounting it would be the hard part but its easy. Now the wiring is driving me nuts. I've been around the block a time or two with 12v systems so I'm no amature. Just cant figure this one out.

There are 3 wires for the tail light on the bike. So of course one is going to be a ground. One a brake light, and one a running light. Well just my luck this isnt working out that easy. I cut the wire harness from the factory light so the wires I describe are harness to light wires.

Now I got a red, a black, and a white wire.
With the ignition on in any position the black wire is always hot.

Before I go into full detail of trial and errors anyone got an idea? If not I'll go write down my tests and post it. And its an led tail light also so I'm not to experienced with leds. The light itself works fine seperatly testing it on the battery.  And the factory light worked fine till a month ago when the bulb busted and I just havent bothered replacing it till now.

Penny for your thoughts..

I found the solution to the LED wiring problem . You have to take the wires off the brake switch completely, then run a switched power source directly to one post on the switch. I took the + from the lighter socket. Then run a new wire from the other switch post, directly to the LED brake light wire. (red in my case) then hook the BRP black to the LED park light wire. (black in my case) Then the BRP red (- wire) to the LED ground (white wire). Now it works just like it's supposed to. The only problem u will have now is u won't be able to start the bike in gear now. If u hook the (start in gear) wires together it will scroll "BRAKE" across the display....thinking the brake lever is pulled. The only way to remedy this will be to get a "T" fitting and screw it in where switch on the master , and run a second switch just for those 2 wires.

If you've got one wire hot all the time and it never changes, that means they have the switches installed in the ground side of the circuit..  This is generally accepted as being safer than switching a hot leg and is becoming more and more common in todays electrical systems.

Psycho  thanks alot for the help and pics. I'm still holding off before doing it that way to further research using another set of relays to reverse it back to a hot lead. I cant wait to get it working and post up pics of my two custom projects.
