I have a 2006 750 Brute Force. I went riding a couple of weeks back, and toward the end of the ride, it started acting like a plug or coil pack was breaking down. It started out backfiring or popping a little, and then it would clear up and run fine. I didn't think that much about it, because it was running too good. I replaced both plugs, and it is still doing it. I thought that maybe I had some trash in the carbs, so I pulled them, and cleaned them out. One had a little bit of mud in the bowl, but the other one was clean. While I was that far in, I adjusted the valves. They were a little loose, but not much. Still, after doing all of that, it is still not right. In one way, it seems like it isn't getting enough gas, but it is getting plenty. One thing I thought wasn't quite right was that it seemed to be blowing some of the gas back up, and not sucking it down the carb. One of the times that we were trying things, the rear exhaust pipe going to the muffler got real red? We then took off the muffler to make sure that it wasn't stopped up, and still no change, just real loud. If anyone has any ideas, I would love to hear them. Thanks in advance...

Are you running a aftermarket CDI?

Yes, I have already taken it off, and it still didn't help. It also has a slip on HMF pipe, snorkles, and has been rejetted. I hope it is something simple, but a friend of mine that has been helping me on it keeps thinking maybe it has a bent valve? That would be my luck with the November Highlifter@Creekbottom ride coming up.

Everything looks good, as far as that goes, but it doesn't take much sometimes to make a mess of things. I do ride in the mud and on occasion some deep water, but I try to be as cautious as I can.

I got a friend whose brute did the same thing but only in water and if he was going fast..  So we searched everywhere for loose connections sparkplugs and stuff.  And finally this weekend we found the problem and fixed it.   where the spark plug wires conect their was alot of the metal clip showing and when it got wet it caused to to back fire, miss, sputter and sound like it was running on one cylinder.  So we unplugged both dielectric greased it all real good took it riding this past weekend and no problems.. You might want to look into this...

Thanks kawaboy, I will check that out tomorrow also. Maybe it will be one of these that cures the problem.

Well, that didn't fix the problem? I did notice last night while it was backfiring through the front carb, that you could see the fire in the cylinder when it was backfiring. Could this mean that it may have jumped time? Or that it may be that bent valve that I didn't want to find? I will be checking the compression here in a little while. Still looking for any other ideas that anyone may have. Thanks again...

I did that last weekend working on foods plots pulling a harrow, rake, and pallet to level the ground.  After an hour or so, it woke up and did fine the rest of the day.  Now it's back to doing the same thing Clay is describing.
