Tired of rocking your Rancher 350S/350ES to shift back into neutral when you stall in a mud hole? Want to just push the starter button and be on your way? Here is the solution. Using this method, your neutral and reverse lights will work as they always have. (This modification applies to all years of Rancher 350S/350ES models.)

Start by removing the seat and the small plastic lid that covers the battery. Also remove the right front wheel and the right front inner fender. This will give you access to the parts involved.

The first step is modifying the wiring at the starter relay so that it operates in any gear. To do this, we need to permanently ground the starter relay’s ground circuit. Find the wiring harness that leads to the starter relay. Carefully slit the harness’ sheathing and cut the Lg/R (light green/red) wire. (Do NOT cut the Lg/R wire too close to the starter relay connector. Make sure to leave yourself enough room to solder in a new length of wire.) Solder a new length of wire to the relay side of the cut Lg/R wire and ground it directly to the negative battery terminal. Using shrink tubing, seal the harness side of the cut Lg/R wire. Tape the slit in the sheathing with electrical tape. Now the starter will operate in any gear, including reverse. Here are pictures that show where everything is and what needs to be done for the starter relay modification.

Next we need to modify the wiring at the ICM so that spark occurs in any gear when cranking the engine. To do this, we need to permanently ground the ICM. On the 00-06 Rancher 350S/350ES, the ICM is located inside the right front inner fender.

Carefully slit the sheathing that covers the wiring harness to expose the ICM’s wiring. Look for the Lg/R (light green/red) wire. Cut it. (Do NOT cut the Lg/R wire too close to the ICM. Make sure to leave yourself enough to room to solder in a new length of wire.) Solder a new length of wire to the ICM side of the cut Lg/R wire. Using shrink tubing, seal the harness side of the cut Lg/R wire. Tape the slit in the sheathing with electrical tape. The length of wire that was soldered to the cut Lg/R wire must be grounded. The Rancher 350's frame ground is located to the left of the ICM and this is the best place to ground the ICM’s new ground wire. Solder a ring terminal to the ICM’s new ground wire and ground it to the frame ground. See illustrations.

(The following step is only necessary on Rancher 350ES models. It does NOT apply to manual shift models.)

Remove the fuse panel cover (under seat), remove the diode (see below), and reinstall the fuse panel cover.

And you’re done. Reinstall the battery cover, seat, right front inner fender, right front wheel, and go for a ride. Now you can start your Rancher 350S/350ES in all five forward gears as well as reverse (and obviously neutral). Again, the neutral and reverse lights will work as they always have - they will not be affected by this modification. If you’re not comfortable cutting into your Rancher’s wiring harness, ask someone with experience in electrical work. Also, make sure to solder all connections and seal them with shrink tubing. I can’t stress this enough.

Good luck and let me know if you need any help with this modification.

The 420 already starts in gear.  Just pull the front brake lever and push the starter button.

It's actually very straightforward.  Just follow my instructions and take your time.  Lots of HL members have done this mod without a problem.

BTW, thanks to Mikimike for being the "guinea pig" on the 350ES portion of this mod.

Bump for Rancher 350 owners.  This is the new updated procedure that includes electric shift models.

No.  Not normal.

Is this a Canadian manual shift TRX350 with the digital display?  If it is, remove the diode from the fuse box as per the instructions for the Rancher 350ES.

If it isn't, go over the steps again.  Something wasn't grounded properly somewhere.

The start-in-gear procedures are very similar between models, but if you're going to do this mod on a 98-01 Foreman 450S, I suggest following the Foreman 400 start-in-gear procedure as the parts are located in the same place.  The Rancher's parts locations are different.  Here is the Foreman 400 procedure.

http://www.highlifter.com/forum/How-to_%2312%3a_modifying_your_95-03_Foreman_400_to_start_in_gear/m_2571738/tm.htm

Or you could use Bansheefan03's brilliant solution of grounding the neutral wire and have the neutral light blinding you at all times.
