I tried the same thing with my old winch.  The best thing is to take it out and untanggle it by hand.

1. Get a grinder and cut it out (be careful not to get it too hot)

2. Replace with synthetic.

hey watch out cutting it.
I've seen those tightly wound in there and when cut it quickly unravels like a spring and with the frays already on it from usage and the new ones created from cutting it could cut your hands up.
Just something to watch out for.

put the winch in freespool and jerk it out or put it in reverse and power the winch out while pulling at it in reverse. the free spool way always works the best for me.

Just make sure it's fully in free spool. I know sometimes mine seems like it's in free spool, but requires a little extra turn to lock in free spool.

I would replace with cable; just my personal preference.  Good luck.

When my sister found my keys when i was on vacation, they twisted it up pretty darn good. I just got somebody to hold down the reverse button, then pull hard as you can to get out. It will eventually work, but like everyone else said be careful cause you don;t wanna get hurt or tear up anything. There is my two cents.

Rope is lighter.. floats.. can be tied in a knot instead of having to use those PITA U-Bolts to repair.. and none of those day-ruining fishhooks that dig into your hands. But i do have to admit that cable could withstand the weather a bit better than rope.

i just had to untangle a winch cable for a teacher at votec today, and there was NO WAY freespooling and pulling would have gotten it out! it looked like someone tied it up on EVERY SINGLE WRAP!  i didnt mind doing it cause it gives me practice for when i will have to do mine. but i would say your best bet to not breaking anything is to just take the winch off the quad. it makes it 10x easier, at least on a honda rubicon it does!
