If you’ve ever removed the swingarm from your straight axle Honda ATV, you’ve seen the locknut on the right side swingarm bolt. This locknut requires a special tool that is not easily obtained and a little on the expensive side. You can make your own tool to allow easy removal/installation of the swingarm locknut. (This does not apply to the Rancher 420 as it uses through-bolts to fasten the swingarm.)

This is the locknut in question.

And here is the special Honda locknut tool.

To make your own locknut removal tool, grab an old 1" impact socket and grind/cut the end to form four equally sized tabs that fit into the locknut’s notches. A bench grinder and rotary tool with cutting disc make this an easy modification. Here is what the modified socket should look like.

Just fit the socket on a ratchet or breaker bar and you can easily remove/reinstall your swingarm’s locknut. I have heard of people using a punch and hammer to remove/reinstall this locknut, but I would advise against this for two reasons. First, the threads can be damaged if the punch slips. Second, the locknut needs to be tightened to a torque of 83 ft/lbs. You will never be able to tighten the locknut to 83 ft/lbs with a punch and hammer and it could back out while riding the ATV, creating a safety hazard. So take a few minutes to fabricate this easy-to-make tool and you’ll save yourself a lot of headaches... and some money.

Hey do you think you could make people some of them and sell them. You got this and the plastic rivit tool. Go and get say 20 cheap sockets and plies make some and sell them for X amount plus shipping. I will buy one as long as the price is right.

...You can make your own...

You must have a whole rack of cut up sockets by now.    Mine isn't so perdy, but I put a piece on the side like the factory one so I can hold the bolt still while I tighten the lock nut.  It's kind of ugly and nearly worn out, cause I should have made the tabs thicker.  So is the nut from using a worn out socket.  Do you find that the lock nuts don't move much, or that the light torqing isn't so critical?  Just curious, as mine need doing again.

Does it have to be a socket?  Absolutely not.
Why is a socket the easiest answer?  Because of a good quality metal (so the little "tangs" will hold up), and because of the ease of attaching a ratchet to it.

I use the official Honda tool that allows me to hold the swingarm bolt (as yours does).  The reason I made this socket is because someone had stolen my Honda tool and I needed something until I got another one.  I was in too much of a hurry to weld a handle on the side of the socket.  I have found that if the threads on both the swingarm bolt and the locknut are in good shape, holding the swingarm bolt isn't necessary.  Is it better?  Yes.  Is it absolutely necessary?  No.  Just hand tighten the locknut and then torque it down and the swingarm bolt shouldn't move much at all (if the threads are in good condition).

this is the alternative to a 17mm allen socket, use a bolt with a 17mm head and weld a nut to it or another bolt and make your own.
