Hey all, I am debating on planning a trip to Hatfield next spring and have a couple of questions. First off I know there are 5 or 6 trail systems do they all link together or are they independent of one other? Second if they are independent which trail system is the best to go to, for mud, rocks, length of trail, in general the most bang for my buck? Next how long should I plan to ride 2 days 3 or more, and do I need a GPS and maps or are they marked? Any help would be great, and thank you in advance.

I went with a group of guys about 7 yrs ago. Had a good time i think we went to browning fork or something like that. Then we had to trailer about 2hrs to another trail head. For the most part we rode the first place almost the whole week. I do remember riding down the asphalt roads to eat lunch at hardes and mcdonalds, that was cool cause it was legal.

I got this info off of Fishers ATV I think:

Hatfield-McCoy Trails

Little Coal River Beginner, easy
Dingess Rum Rocky
Buffalo Mtn. Rocky, rugged
Pinnacle Creek Scenic
Indian Ridge Scenic, muddy
Browning Fork Little of everything

All trails are independent of each other. A good web site for info:
http://www.trailsheaven.com/

We're planning on going next fall for a week, so I'm in the research mode right now.

Cool thanks for the info, I was on their site yesterday and was looking at trail maps and length of each trail system, Browing fork had the most with 95 so that where I think we will go.

Hey I can help you out, I go out to wv all of the time to ride. I've been on the Indian Ridge and Pinnacle Creek trail systems. Indian Ridge is about 70 miles long and is very well shaded for those hot days and also has alot of mudholes of various sizes and depths! The trail is very smoothe and an ideal place for young people to ride on(family). The Pinnacle Creek system has nice views, but the dust can be a little overwhelming if it hasn't rained for a while. You can get trail maps at the trailheads or just download them from Trailsheaven.com . You don't need a GPS. You can easily ride each trail system in a days time. The trails are not interconnected yet, but some of them will be eventually. There are some other trails around the Indian Ridge and Pinnacle Creek systems called the Outlaw and Wagon wheel trails. These trails are free to ride on and don't have any rules, but there are alot of idiots that ride them, so you need to be cautious on these. Its great riding though. There aren't any trail maps, so you just have to explore or find a group to follow because you can get lost. It is a good idea to have a GPS for these trails (Outlaw and WagonWheel). Far more people ride the Outlaw trails than the Hatfield-McCoy and quite frankly I ride the Outlaw trails 3 to 4 times more. The Outlaw and WagonWheel trails are basically old abandend logging and coalmining rides. Some are actually small gravel public roads. These trails are very wide so you can really haul the mail. If you can't find these trails, just talk to somebody on the Hatfield-McCoy. I hope my info helped you out. Uh also, there are some camping sites along the Outlaw and Wagonwheel trails and they are really cheap.

Cool thanks for the input, never heard for the outlaw and wagon wheel trails may have to check into them. When is usually the best time to go I am planning on early spring. I am looking forward to a good ride in the mountains. The last trip I went on was to Silverlake MI, all dunes and my Eiger had some trouble but its cool it was a good time, so much I am going back in a couple of weeks.

Anytime after its rained alot (2 days or more). So usually April is the best time to go, but the weather can be a little moody sometimes. Summer is just too dusty. Oct is nice because the leaves are changing colors, but the dust can be a headache at times. Take a good pair of goggles and some sort of dust mask over your mouth and nose. Besides a helmet, these are probably the 2 best things you can ever bring with you!

I live near the Williamson trail head. It connects to a couple of the other trail heads including Matewan, that is one of the towns it is legal to ride in as well as Williamson. If you go to the Matewan depot resturant , that is a place that all the trail riders go because it is only couple a hundred yards from the trail. Any how, there are guides there that will take you on off trail rides through the mountains that are pretty much endless and as rough as you want to go. In this area there are endless hundreds of miles of riding off the Hatfield Mccoy trail but as BF500EFI said I would get a guide. You may want to check into the Williamson trailhead location because it is within 30 miles or so of a couple of the other trailheads in both directions, Gillbert W.V in on direction ( the one they ride on Fisher ATV all the time) and Logan W.V the other direction. there is two trail heads there. I can leave from here and be in anyone of those locations in about 35 minutes. Also there are Hotels, resturants, bars and repair shops here. If you come during the prime season in the spring you will meet riders from all over the United States.I hope this inside opinion has been some help to you.

yeah I'm going a few more times in Oct. this year and thats going just about do it for this riding year. I went up on Thanksgiving weekend last year and about froze to death-won't be doing that anymore. Oh by the way I stay up at Hilltop Escape. A friend of mine has a camper he keeps up there a year around and I pitch my tent up there beside em. Its cheap and convenient

Got that right! We usually camp, but we're staying in a cabin at the bar this time.  We were up there one November camping (at Wes' place before he died) and everything that wasn't in a cooler froze every night! This spring it rained so hard I thought the tent was going to float away. We figured we'd give the cabin a try... For the past 3 years we've been camping at the bar and Jerry and Susan are really good people. It's always a blast and now that we know the trails, it's even better. No way that I'd try the stairsteps now though, man it's washed out!

Just my 2cents worth, we have been to W.V. twice. The week at Thanksgiving last year and we went up this August. I thought it was suppose to be ATV'ers paradise. That is all we heard and read about. The **** time we saw 6 other riders in TWO days. We stayed in Matewan then and it was awful. In August, we stayed in Gilbert and saw few more people but nothing like we thought we would. To us, it just isn't all that people make it out to be. The trails are nice but we only saw 2 mud puddles also. We won't be going back.
Like I said, just my 2cents.

I've noticed that too at some of the other Hatfield trails. But the Indian Ridge trail system does have some good mud holes. Alot of people, especially some of the locals, don't really care for the HM trails because it was organized by a group of people from out of state, Georgia I think. Alot of the money brought in actually does not go to West Va. Even though it has helped the economy in the local riding areas (gas, food, lodging). alot of  atv riders don't like the rules or the fines that come when you don't abide by the rules. Some are just too cheap to pay for a permit. There hundreds upon hundreds of trails that exist around the HM trails that alot of people ride on and there aren't any rules or permits that go with them. These are the types of trails most people ride on in WV. The way I look at it is any large trail system like Hatfield McCoy is better than no trail system at all! Come to Virgina because we have no trail systems here, unless you like riding dinky little 15 mile loops.

Yeah I've wanted to try the stairstep, but I've seen too many banged up people leave that place. I'd rather keep my body parts together as well as my atvs intact too. So I think I'll just be an observer rather than a thrill-seeker.  How many miles do you guys ride on a weekend? We usually go 50 to 80 each day - (Thank the Lord for IRS)

Yeah, we call some of the flat sufaces of the stairs the boneyard, when you see so many parts laying down there. The guys on sport quads and dirtbikes are CRAZY the way they hit them! What does really good is rhinos, I've seen one back up the steps! I used to have a little fun on them with my old Brute, but the last time I took the Cat up on the left at the guard rails, I had to make that right turn, and ended up standing on the left floorboard and inching accross to keep from flipping. I thinks cat's sit a little too high for that craziness. Yeah, I'd say about 50+ miles is right and yes, thank the Lord for IRS. So many trails there, if you got a full tank, it's kind fun to get lost- as long as it's not lost on H&M... You been through soggy bottoms?

H&M trails are more for beginners, there will never be mud as these trails are well groomed.  Even the black trails are more of a cruise through journey with little to no difficulty.

Unfortunately I missed our annual Labor Day 2008 ride, but was there in 2007.  While I go alot with friends, we always go Labor Day for the big blowout.

There is a campground just passed Wagon Wheel which services the "Outlaw Trails".  They bring in tractor trailers with parts, and merchandise just for the weekend.  2007 vendors estimated over 10,000 atv's of various sort's in one campground.  Every restaurant in Welch, WV had no parking available, yep, so many atv's that you couldn't get out of the parking lots.  Ironic part, Indian Ridge parking lot had 3 trucks in it...

Downside to Outlaw trails are that the safety records cannot be compared to H&M, while the state trails are quite safe, it also make's them boring.  But, on a big weekend riding around the stairsteps it isn't uncommon to see LifeFlights several times.  Something H&M has only had to do twice in it's existance.

BTW, if you want a Honda, stand at the bottom of the Stair Steps, one will be coming shortly...   :)

Yeah, I've been down there. That ride can be a little challenging after its rained alot. I've seen right many sunkin 4-wheelers down through there and some of the riders don't care if they tear their equipment up either. Those are the kind of people that have more money than sense. I wish I could say that . I would probably have a different atv for each week of the year. hee, hee
You like your AC 500? One of the guys that rides with us has one. he's been pleased with it thus far. I noticed your wife has a Hawkeye 300. I bought my wife one of those new Polaris Sportsman 400HO, which sits on the same platform as a Hawkeye. Its a great little wheeler, but I can't stand the radiator on it because its so exsposed and gets clogged easily. I wish Polaris would have just put a simple oil cooled engine in it. I bought it in April of this year and it already has 700 miles on it. Of course all of it coming from WV trails.

The tractor trailor does not come anymore due to a lack of sales and the pain in the butt it is to get it down there. I talked to the owner of it who just happens to have a little atv shop there in Bluewell.
The riding has been down this year as compared to last year due to the gas prices.

Yeah, I have no sense and no money! I love the Cat, it has been without a doubt the toughest four wheeler that I've ever owned. Everything that has broke on it has ALWAYS been my fault, busting axles by not using throttle control, etc... I'm the only one from my group that tries and makes it through the huge hole in Soggy Bottoms- with Bighorns! I can't wait to go up and test out my new Zillas. I lost a little ground clearance, but they look like a really good tire. If I could afford a new A/C Mudpro... That's the Cat, that's set up perfect for me, stock and just the way it sits. But besides the rear fenders wanting to tear at the slightest hit (hope the newer model Cats are better) I really have no complaints about it. It's not got huge power like the big bore, but the ride it good and it has plenty of power to turn the tires I run.
She loves that little Hawkeye! I keep asking her if she wants something bigger and it's always no. Thank goodness it's air cooled! I love everything about the bigger Polaris', but the radiator location. I'm not the type to stick one on the rack, because that's where I keep my strap bag, tool bag and cooler at. I love the 08 800's, but the first thing I see when I look at them is the radiator hung way down low. I have to spend enough time cleaning the Cats out and it sits high. One of my best friends has a 500 like you and it's been a really good bike too, and it's much more comfy than mine is. For whatever reason Cats and Popo's and my favorite with Yamaha/Suzuki tied for third. I know that Suzukis are TOUGH. My 500 Suzuki motor has plenty of power, been totally sank at least six times and isn't smoking or burning oil. Sorry, started to ramble...

Tracy

"Outlaw trails - we can't give permission to ride them, but people have, and still do" --Sign in Wagon Wheel Restaurant.

You say your going to roll a Honda off of the Stairstep. Let me know when your going to do it so I can assist you in pushing it off!

Nah, saying that you see alot of Honda's rolling off the stairsteps.  Almost everytime I've been there you see a honda in various stages of destruction sitting at the bottom.  Most notably, there was a rincon with less than 50 miles on it.

So just stand at the bottom, one will be along shortly...
