my wifes bike keeps eating exhaust gaskets, not the donut on the header, the one thats on the pipe where it mounts to the slip on, it gets loose and I tighten and tighten it, but eventually after just a ride or two it needs a new gasket, this problem is even worse when shes in the water as it allows water to enter the exhaust easier and its hard to keep running
what am I doing wrong, Ive replaced this gasket 3 times in the last 6 months and it needs another one now
I have almost bottomed out the clamp that comes on the hmf but still it comes apart

I have had the same problem... but it wasn't the slip on part. It was the can on the pipe. When i sent it off to get repacked the noise went away

its not a noise
it keeps breaking the silver gasket under the slip on part of the muffler, when it does you can hear the exhaust leak and then it dies when you get it in the water real easy

It sounds like when it comes loose it rides on the gasket and eats it away! When you tighten it up put lock-tite on it and see if it keeps from coming loose.

^^^^^^^^^ Gonna have to try that last suggestion tomorrow, as mine is doing the same thing.  At least I know that I'm not the only one with this problem.

Is the pipe bolted tight to the frame? Seems like if it weren't it would allow for excess vibration. The head pipe would be relatively stationary (cause its bolted to the head)and the slip on part would move around and the joint would get ate up as you describe.

Another thought...Has anyone wrecked into the back of the bike? This could cause the pipe to be bent at the joint. My friend bent the "tabs" (the end of the slip-on part) on his hmf while trying to put it on and it leaked at the joint until we took it off and bent them back into place. You may try to pull the pipe off and push the tabs in just a bit. I'm sure your probably doing this already, but a wire brush helps seal the joint.

i had the same problem with my slip-on HMF. the first one i put on got ate up on the first ride. after that, i took the pipe off, then put the new one on. this time i tightened down the t-bolt as tight as i could. then i started the bike up and let it run for a minute to get the pipe hot. every couple of minutes i would try to tighten the t-bolt even more while it was hot. after doing this i haven't had any problems. hopefully that will help

I was just gonna post a question about this so the solution to this would be to put lock tight on the end of the pipe were it fits together with the stock header then tighten the clamp up as it gets hot?? thanks

sorry Ive been out of town
no one has hit the back of the bike, and the mounting bolt on the muffler to the frame is the factory one, set in a rubber bushing to dampen the vibration, would replacing this with a solid bolt and washer help, and I have had to spread the tabs every time Ive had to replace the gasket as i cranked it so tight that it would not clear new gasket and head pipe
Ill try olyellers advice this next time when the gasket comes in again and Ill try to remove the rubber bushing bolt and hard bolt it like my grizzly is
