i just bought a 1979 jeep cj-5 and im wanting to set it up for huntin/offroading.  there are some trails on egg land airforce base for moderate off roading which is where ill be going.  so my question is...what should i do to the jeep?  it is purty much bone stock.  it has a 6 cylinder straight shift.  only thing different from stock is the wheels and some 31s.  so help me guys.

spring over lift, 35's, lower gears, locker(s); would be pretty capable with those mods.

And about $3k later...lol.  That is an ideal build but very expensive to do...and I was a little on the cheap side with that number.

WINCH!  then who cares if you make it throught he hole or not!  haha On a rig like this that would be my first investment.  Heck a 6k would pull that buggie out of anything.

If you plan on gettin 35's plan on regearing and either gettin dana 44's front and rear or gettin stronger axles.  I would get 33's personally, I know from experience...

how does this sound to yall guys:

to achieve around 4 inches of lift would putting on some 2 inch lift shackles and some 2 inch lift add-a-leafs be good?  and then of course get some longer shocks.

Im just looking at cheaper lift solutions because this is definetly a cheap jeep project.

One peice axles. Or you can wait until you break the two peice axles that are in it now and then swap them out. You can find out anything you want to know over at www.jeepforum.com/forum

You need to put one peice shafts in it but i would wait till i spun the 2 peice first. And if you are going to put 35s on it i would deff get some gears like a 4.11 or a 4.56    IMOP

You can wheel with 35s on it on a reg basis and not have probs if you don't beat on it everywhere you go. The Dana 30 and AMC 20 axles that are under it are by no means strong axles but they are not junk either. Build the Jeep the way you want it and take care of the probs when they come up, if you have a prob with the Dana 30 don't waste your time fixing it if you can find a Dana 44 for the same price, same for the rear if you damage it swap a Ford 9" under it. I would not put a locker in the front of it if you do 35s cause that will put some unneeded stress on the smallish U-joints. A freind of mine had 36" Swampers on his Cherokee with a more powerfull 4.0HO and 4.56s in smaller axles, with lockers at both ends, then that CJ has and he wheeled it hard every weekend for about a yr befor the motor let go. I've got a 92 YJ on 42s with that Cherokees axles under it and I've had good luck with it but then again I don't have to beat it to get through much with 42s. I also know a guy that has a 69 Bronco that has the same front axle as that CJ and he has a 450 horse 351C under the hood of that on 35" Boggers no probs yet, he built it 7yrs ago. You can get cheap gears that will work just as good as any of the expensive ones and you can get lockers like Lock Rite, or Qwik Locks for under $350ea for both axles. You could have a very capable Jeep with about 6" of lift 35s gears and lockers for around 2k depending on how much you get charged for the gear installation. If you can do that yourself then you prob can do it for under $1500, those old Jeeps are cheap to modify.

Where can you find a 44 to fit in the front of a CJ with out costing a ton of money??? Because I know that rebuilding a 30 and a 35 is cheap

I picked up a high pinion Dana 44 and a Ford 9" out of a 78 F-150 for 300 bucks that have 4.56 gears in good shape, and also had a set of 15x10 American Racing alloys wrapped in 39.5" Baja Belteds still bolted to them out of a local junk yard. They has the same bolt pattern as the CJs do so no different wheels, also has crossover style steering not the push pull crap.

Good deal, but thats alittle more work than bolt in. And if you want the same width you would have to narrow. Thats what my point was above you would be hard press to find a 44 for the front of a CJ cheap.

Its not that much more then bolt on, all you gotta do is weld on some new spring perches and bolt them in. 2-3hrs with a grinder, tape measure, and a welder and you got a fuul width far stonger CJ. You are right it would have to be some decent carnage to warrant that instead of fixing the Dana 30 but, if he keeps his eyes open he can snag the kind of deal I found. Another near bolt in swap is to find a low pinion Dana 44 and Mopar 9.25 out of a Ramcharger, or front and rear Dana 44s out of a full size Jeep. Theres two more choices with the same bolt pattern. My point was more that he shoudn't be fearfull of 35s just because he has a smallish axle in the front. Without a locker it will survive for a good while giving him time to take care of other things more important and come back to the axle swap when he really needs it. When dealling with a trail truck you will never eliminate your weak links, you will just move them around lol. With the kind of lift he is looking for it is going to look kind of goofy on only 33s, he could prob get 38s on it with 6" lift as the old leaf sprung Jeeps didn't flex super good.

dang you really think i could get 38s under it....now thats somethin to think about.  I've got a buddy with a ramcharger sitting in his yard.  He might sell me the axles from it.  I might do the 4 inch lift and convert to a spring over design...what do yall think about that?

so what im thinkin is:
4 inch lift springs+2 inch lift shackles+about 5 to 6 inches from converting to spring over set-up should give me about 11 of 12 inches of lift.  and when im doing the spring over conversion I might swap in some better axles with lower gears and get some maybe 39.5s and put under it.  how does that sound to yall?

now most of these plans are for later down the road, but i think its feasable.

I've got a YJ thats been sping over converted and has 6" springs and 2" shackles for a total of about 12-13" of lift and it has 42s on it with no rubbing. I think with 6" of lift you could get away with 38s but 35-37" would prob be the perfect size. If you did the 6" of suspension lift and added a 3" body on top of that then 38s will fit no prob, I've seen one like that on 39.5 Boggers.

do you think leaf springs from a ram charger will fit under the cj?  Ive gotta buddy who has a 5.5 inch lift for his ram charger, but he ended up rolling it and totaling it. He said he would sell me his lift and axles out of his parts truck.

i have built a couple jeeps if you truly want a very capable "cheap" jeep. this is my opinon and im am jsut tryin to help so if you dont agree sry.... 2 things get you where u wanna go. ur tires and flex. (unless all ur gonna do is mud bog then its jsut tires. lol) if ur gonna run ur stock axles (which i suggest) do a spring over and conversion and use yj leaf springs. it will flex ALOT better that saves u from havin to buy a lift you can tuck 35s with no problem run 4.11 or 4.56 gears. (ring and pinion sets are cheap about 200 a set and that includes a install kit with shims and new bearings) also try and stay away from super long shackles they are no good. i would suggest so stronger one piece aftermarket ones a lil longer than stock but not a 2in lift shackle. ur i-6 makes pleanty of tourqe to spin the tires with the gearing. cut and tube ur front fenders. get rid of the 2 piece rear axles again they are cheap about 250 for a good set of rear axles. put ox joint u-joints or something comparable in the front axles. i run a 33 but a 35 wouldnt be bad. some agressive but not extreme like a procomp or bf goodrich mud terrain. boggers break stuff! lol. wled teh rear and run a lock right locker in the front end. leave the drive shafts and ur weak points thay are the cheap and easy to fix! well thats it. if you ahve any questions or anything let me know man ill help if i can.

the only decent pic i have of mine.

The Dana 30 and AMC 20 axles that are under it are by no means strong axles but they are not junk either.

I never implied that the AMC 20 was junk, but the two peice axle shafts are junk. You don't have to change the whole rear end, just the axle shafts. When you're finished, you will still have the AMC 20 but with one peice shafts. However if you do want to swap the rear axle for a stronger unit, the CJ-7 came stock with a Dana 44 in 1986. It would be a direct replacement for your Jeep.
