I have a 99 Sportsman 500 that has developed a squeal. It sounds like it's coming from the recoil starter housing. What is in there that makes this noise. at idle it's real faint, but in gear under load it's loud.....

It's like nails on the chalk board.......

Are you sure it's not coming from the clutch side? My 99 Sportsman 500 4x4 made noise like you mentioned and it was the drive clutch rubbing on the plastic housing.

No I'm not 100% sure, but if you put your ear to the recoil side I would say that's where it's coming from... I have pulled the snorkel off the clutch side and the noise still sounds like the recoil side.

Any one else have any ideas?
