Well all those are ok but you need to spend some good money on scope. For long shots get a fast flat bullet. Id look into a 7mm over the other ones you have. I like a 308 alot but I do shoot a 7mm. I have killed a deer at 300 with it but have missed that far. I would base a purchse just on long shoots. Get a good bolt action like an icon and buy a leupold scope and be set up

300 Winn Mag.  I can shoot out to around 500 yards with my Browning A-Bolt.  I've done some work to it, but even stock it would have done the job.  I put on a Nikon Monarch 2.5-10x50 with the BDC reticle and I have been very pleased with its performance.  Im working on developing the right powder, load, and bullet size combo now.  But with factory loads it is shooting around 3/4 minutes of an arch.  Thats with Winchester Silver Ballistic Tips.

If you miss at that distance it is the shooters fault. With the right bullet most rifles can shoot less than a 3" group at 350. All of those listed are plenty good enough to take down a deer. A 300 mag or 7mm mag will just get there a bit faster.

The 7mm weatherby mag is what I shoot. The ammo for it is expensive around here ~$60 a box. It gets the job done though. I personally love the 7mm-08. Have had mine for about 7 years now and shoot the p!ss out of it. It will shoot groups at 400 yards you can cover with a silver dollar using hornady light mags

I love the short mags!  a .270 wsm is great!    I really wanted one when I got my 7mm ultra mag but there werent any around and the 7mm was my second choice... not one around to be found and the store I stopped at last actually had a 7mm RUM, which was my 3rd choice.... so thats what I went with

Like most have already said anywhere around the .300,7mm or someting of that range would be fine.   the 280 remington seems to be a pretty sweet round.... the problem is that you will run into the same issue I have and thats FINDING BULLETS.    they aren't stocked just anywhere and when you find them they arent cheap!

ohh and buy yourself a good scope!   you dun have to have a $2,000 scope.   but a good quality leaupold will work!   a higher power helps when ya get to shooting long distances and a larger bell like a 56mm is nice too!

I know people that regularly shoot .223 and .243 cals from this distance successfully.  Its all about shot placement and quality of the scope.

I love a .243!  I have a single shot(break down type) and I love that gun.... problem is the barrel is only like 18-20 inches... its not a youth model, but its very small and it doesnt shoot the best groupings.... which that could have just been the shooter too.. I havent shot it in a couple of years.  I dunno if I could get a longer barrel for it or not but that would be awesome if I could!

i agree with the 300 crowd.  the WSM's are hot bu they are exspensive to shoot.  300 win mag is a versatile round.  you can load from 125 grain up to 230 grain i belive.

the truth of the matter is 350 yards off a bench is one thing,  350 yards hangin off the side of a tree is a whole dif animal.  good luck with that shot

I shoot a Ruger m77 7mag and the gun is far more accurate than the shooter.  Most guns are.  A couple of tips for long shots.  Get a good scope and take your time mounting it(locktite, center up the rings, double check everything, get the eye relief right).  Keep the riflings clean, it makes a big difference in the grouping.  Always let the barrel cool between shots when sighting in.  Even with a heavy, free floating barrel this is important.

ruger M77 25-06.  shoots flat and straight.  will kill an animal if the shooter can put the bullet where it needs to be.

I prefer a more precisely placed shot with a small round than a mosterously large bullet placed 2 feet away from the kill zone just to blow legs off to make sure the animal doesnt have a chance to run

I love my 7 mag.  It is a cheapo Winchester from Wal Mart pre rigged with a cheap Simmons 3x9.  I shoot 150 grain winchesters in it and have literally dropped EVERY deer I have shot at.  I have killed 7 with it so far with the farthest shot @ 444 yards.  She is sighted in an inch high at 100.  Drops to 1 inch low at 300.  Sucker has proven itself to me by far.
For the close in the woods shots I still revert back to the ole 30 30!
Old school I guess!

Well 7mm will shoot that far easily, same with a .300 Win Mag but my 30-06 is up there with them. For long distances I recommend a 7mm Ultra Mag if your man enough to shoot it :

At that distance, you're gonna need to be awfully good to pull off the shot with any kind of consistancy, no matter what caliber you choose.  The .308 has a better ballistic coefficient that almost any other round. Thats the reason its a prefered sniper round for military and law enforcement agencies. If you get a big, punishing round with tons of recoil, you'll be hard pressed to shoot it well.....especially in a hunting situation. my best advice is to get something that you can actually shoot well.......no matter what the caliber, if you can consistantly hit with it, you'll be alot better off than shooting a big magnum that you can't hit a Buick with because you flinch and jerk the shot.
And, I'm sorry but some of these stories of sub-moa accuracy at 300-400 yds are just very hard to believe. I mean, come on guys.......silver dollar size groups at 400 yds ? Thats 2''.........thats  1/2 minute of angle......thats alot to ask from professional marksman, much less your average hunter. It makes me wonder just how many people have actually shoot groups at 300+ yds.....it will really humble you. Its not easy.....try it and see.

Are you doubting me and my handloads? This is from lastweek getting my new load set spot on.
