And I have some questions...

I traded my Honda for an 05 Kodiak 400, which upon closer inspection, needs some work.

It is missing a bolt right under the belt housing drain that is allowing the engine oil to run out.  Im gonna try to get the bolt from the local dealer monday.

one of the inner rear boots has a tiny hole but is letting cv grease out.  is this hard to change?

also, the seal where the rear of the engine meets the driveshaft is leaking.  How hard is that to change?

I will have pics soon.

Boots aren't hard to replace.  Do a search on here and you'll find a how to.  The oil seal on the other hand can be a real pain in the butt.  I wound up having to take my motor out to change it.  If it's the one I'm thinking about where the driveshaft goes into the rear of the motor then good luck.  Unless you can get a u joint tool to seperate the yoke from the driveshaft into that small of a working area then you're gonna have to pull the motor.  The yoke is bolted onto the drive gear so you have to take an impact to it to get it off after seperating the u joint.  Then pull the yoke out, replace the seal, then put it all back together.

Yep, what I did was I wrapped my CV boot in Saran Wrap, then I wrapped it in packing tape.  It has held up for well over 1000 miles, no clicking, no leaking grease...  It worked excellent.

haha thanks, sounds like a solution.  this tear is so small rubber cement or some sorta glue will probably fix it.

but did those 1000 miles consist of a lot of mud?

well I have only drove over a decent sized fallen tree and hit a set of ruts and in 2wd it does ok but when in 4wd it struggles.
I learned pretty much you gotta be hard on the gas BEFORE you get in a tough situation.

Nope, mostly gravel, cement or grass...  Mostly hardpack trails...  Occasionally a stream here or there.  Also you could put rubber cement on the hole, wrap it in saran wrap, take a heat gun and shrink the saran wrap, repeat that process, then wrap it in packing tape.  Or spend $50 and just replace it.  I only did the saran wrap thing because I was in sort of a pinch and didn't want to run my CV dry for several hundred miles...  I haven't replaced it yet because it has held up so well!

thats probably what Ill do but if I have to go thru the trouble of replacing the seal on the back of the engine Ill probably just do it the right way.

thanks for the info.

Ask yourself this question...."Is it really worth the risk of losing a complete CV joint over the few dollars that a CV boot is going to cost you?"
Don't skimp out om something so vital....Yea rapping it in seran wrap MAY work.....but if it doesn't, then the consequences are expensive.

Do yourself a BIG favour, and replace that leaking cv boot before any damage is incurred. And YES, since you have the complete axle out, you might as well replace the seals as well. If it were me doing it, I would replace the differential and hub bearing seals at the same time. Replace them all. Its just cheap insurance. It just makes sense to me.
Do it right, do it once.

I hope this helps you with your decision.

Dezz

thanks I see your point.  the wheel bearings are tight so I wont mess with their seals unless I can tell they look bad.

Im going on a small ride tomorrow (no mud deeper than the hubs) and for that Ill wrap the boot up but after that ride Ill probably tear it apart and replace the boot & seal.
