my wife bought me one from wally-world for about 75 bucks.  i didn't know anything about them when i got it but it works great and it's easy to understand.  just go there and find a simple one, see what they got.

I have a lowrance iway 500c and it works great. You can map out all your trails, it plays mp3s and is water proof. It is kind of pricey, but I also use it in my truck, and on my boat.

I have a Garmin 60CSX, and along with the mph it has a whole lot of other features that I don't even really use.
It's very rugged and waterproof too.

I have a Garmin etrex legend HCX. I love it. I bought a 2 gig micro sd card for it and I love how much map data I can put on the sd card. Looking forward to aking it deer hunting in 10 days. If I had the money, I would have purchased a Garmin rino 530. That is quite the unit.

I have a few of them, if I were buying today I'd look at the Garmin Zumo 450.

You can not go wrong with Garmin, if you like fiddling with lots of options then go with the GPSMap60.  But the Legend Cx is another excellent choice.  It may take some practice to get good with all the options but it is worth the time.
