Well...we had a freak accident yesterday. I was sitting at a red light behind a 3/4 Ton Ram with a drop hitch. The light turned green. He proceeded to take off and then I did too. Before we even got 30 feet...a fire truck on the cross road to the left bleeped his siren. As he did...I looked real fast and then looked forward only to see the Ram heavy on his brakes. I immediately stood on my brakes (feeling that stupid anti-lock pumping) and didn't stop in time and hit his drop hitch. This was 10-15 mph max. The roads were wet.

The cop wasn't going to issue any tickets (I should have got one as I hit him in the back)...but I wanted to make sure there were no insurance problems so I requested a report. He said he could do a citizen's report. The other driver and I agreed. Next thing I know, he comes back saying since he did the report, he had to give me a ticket (following to close). He said I should have no problem getting it dropped as he did include the fire truck as a secondary cause of the accident.

The Ram's hitch was at a slight angle after the hit. I told him he should have his frame checked and he agreed.

I couldn't believe the damage caused at such a low speed. I mean by the time I bumped him...I am thinking I was slowed to maybe 7-10 mph. I expected to get out of the truck and see a dented license plate.

This is what I saw when I got out...

Pretty surprising huh?

Looking back at it all and after hearing the other driver's story...It happened in less then 50' like this.

1. We both stopped at light. I was about 10' behind him.
2. The light turned green and he proceeded to go.
3. I proceeded to follow him.
4. Fire truck in crossroad (stopped behind another car) bleeped his siren. As he bleeped his siren...we both looked real fast.
  - The guy in front of me jammed on his brakes at the same time he was looking (without even checking his six to see I was coming).
  - I looked for a split second and then focused on what was going on in front of me...which caused me to stand on the brakes.
5. I hit him as I was on the hard brakes.

Now before all you Ram guys come up laughing...his hitch was bent and his frame may be bent. Not sure yet. I will say that my bumper setup sucks IMO. So does anti-lock brakes. They should only kick in at 30 or more mph IMO.

I am looking for a TUFF bumper. Any ideas or links would be great. It will need to fit a late model 2007-2008 Silverado 1500 (half ton) though. So far I am looking at Ruenel, and the BuckStop Baja model bumpers.

LOL...I couldn't dodge it...so I rammed it! Not really...but funny saying anyways.

Pretty flimsy though. I am not sure what the insurance estimate will come in at yet...but if it's enough...I'll try and get one of those ones I linked above I think. I am not to impressed with that damage at such a low speed.

Wow your lucky the airbags didnt deploy from the looks of it.

I knew the NNBS trucks were weak but dang.

Id like to see the same result if it was a 73-87 Chevy truck...

For sure man. I guess the airbags don't deploy when it's hit in the low center like that.

Yea, I dont know where the sensors are located but that looks to be a hit that would have triggered them.

I know Westin makes the little push bar for the front but it doesnt look to provide much protection like these massive bumpers I sometimes see on Dodge duallys.

 crazy it did all that.
I do have to say if your anit-lock brakes were kicken in if you did not have them your brakes would have just locked up and slowed you even less.

check out ranch hand bumpers. It should survive a another front impact alot better than the stock "bumper" and is most likely a cheaper alternative than going back with the stock one. www.ranchhand.com

Yeah the Ironbull bumpers look nice. The Ranchhand ones would if they came in something other than diamond plate and their prices are great.

I guess it will just come down to if the 2500 bunpers fit the 1500's. Looks like they should really.

I just got off the phone with Ironbull and they just came out with a new bumper for the new style Silverado 1500 series trucks. Jesse at Ironbull is gonna give me an awesome deal on one too.

Here is a picture of it mounted up on a 1/2 ton like mine.

Should be ordering it later this weel. Will take 3-4 weeks to get here.

vechicles nowadays are suppose to do stuff like that so the driver doesnt take the hit.. and also theres nothing behind the center of that bumper, just the frame rails.

My brother has a 77 chevy, accidentally rolled a small Trackhoe over on the driver side of the bed and it didnt put much more than a dent in it.. haha Lil bondo and vola!!

here is his front bumper we built.. :D

Have you looked at any of the Road Armor bumpers?  They have some pretty nice ones.  There's a custom shop here in town that sales them and the owner has one on his Chevy.  It looks really nice.
