A local go-kart track went out of business a few years back and has since changed owners a couple of times, to make a long story short the new owner is a very cool guy that loves sport quads and more specifically loves flat track racing. He is in the process of changing the track a little for flat track quad races, I have always liked that kind of racing as I am deathly afraid of heights and do not like to jump that high because of that. I don't have much experience in setup or suspension mods to atvs for this kind of racing, I was wondering what are some cheap and simple things I could do to My Banshee to get it flat track ready? It has Works remote res shocks with dual rate springs, but aside from them the suspension is stock. I was thinking about doing a Durablue lowering kit and flipping the front wheels or replacing them with more offset ones and getting some American Racer tires for starters, anything else I should do? It handles very good already, so I'm not planning on doing much. Also should I increase the psi in the shocks for that kind of racing or decrease the psi for better handling? I'm thinking increase the psi will stiffen the shock and help but I'm not sure.

If your just starting out, get a cheaper set of tires and spend the rest of the money on suspension or motor mods. If you dont have a swaybar your gonna need to run your front shocks really stiff to help with roll. Other than that just get it low and wide. Maybe a -2 swingarm, they help the handling and traction a lot.

These tires are cheaper and will last longer than the american racer. The only drawback is a little less traction.

Thanks for the link to those tires, I'm afraid that my budget will not come close to allowing me to start modding the suspension. I'm not going to be able to do much of anything to the Shee before next spring that will cost money, I've got too many projects going right now already. I'll play around with the shock psi if the guy continues with his plans, should know soon if he is going to do it. I'm gonna go ahead and get the lowering kit they are fairly cheap and that will help with the low part at least, might go ahead and get another set of wheels a little more offset to get it a little wider anyway. Still working on getting another set of plastics to make it look better, cause if I can make it look good and find a buyer this thing is gone so I can get another 4-stroke with electric start and a softer throttle lol. Thats another reason I don't want to sink any real money into it.

The rear end should be fine once you lower it. Just reverse the front rims if you dont feel like spending the extra money. It should get you at least 4 or 5 inches wider in the front and be a whole lot cheaper.

best thing I can suggest is get the bike set up so the swingarm and belly of the bike are in a horizontal plane in relation to the floor. Make the front a-arms level also. You can lower it by using 1" angle iron cut into pieces long enough to move the shocks out far enough to allow the front a-arms to be parallel to the ground. Adjust the shocks to the stiffest possible setting.

Thanks I'll try to get it setup that way before the spring, the shocks are psi adjustable anybody know if theres a max psi I should stay below to not damage the shocks? I was thinking about getting some new wheels for it anyway when I get the new plastics to make it look better there too, so thats now big deal. I really like the ITP C-series 4-spokes for sports and they would match the wheels I got on my Rancher. I rode by the track today on the way home and since the last time I went by there the guy has plowed the track, leveled it, smoothed it over again, and hes got tires and some guardrails around the middle of the track so it looks like he is serious about it. If anybody else has any suggestions let me know and I'll keep you guys posted.

I would stay away from the c-series wheels, they weigh a ton. Just call works and they should be able to tell you what pressure to run the shocks at.

I'd run the wheels I got on it now for the race tires and get the C-series for normal riding cause they look a lot better. If I still got the Shee when the time comes I'll give Works a ring and see what they reccomend, but I got wind yesterday that a guy has a yellow 04 400EX and he wants something that is or at least can be made a lot faster for cheap. I've tried getting in touch with him and he hasn't called me back yet. Another guy I know knows this guy pretty good thats how I found out he might be interested in trading, if he is then I'm gonna jump on it. As far as I know it is mostly stock with a good pipe (I think he said LRD), a K&N, jet kit, aftermarket bumper, nerf bars, and different wheels with new Holeshots all around. I've got my fingers crossed that he will say yes, but if not I'll keep going on the Banshee for a while longer.

I'd rather have a quick, comfortable, and reliable 4-stroke over a finicky, uncomfortable, but fast 2-stroke any day of the year. The Shee's power is awesome, if it was as comfortable to me as my 03 460EX was then I'd keep it, but I just can't get comfortable on this thing. Not to mention this thing is harder on gas then my big block Bronco lol, if I plan on riding all day at the sand pit I go to then I got to carry some gas with me on my 460EX I could ride two full days there on a full tank.

Trust me man, First chance you get sell the shee and get a 05 and up V-force. The 04's can be found cheap but they had soild mounted rocker arms in the heads and they would sieze up and drops pieces in the motor. Get one and put a new belt on it, a maroon primary spring and change the motor oil and rear diff fluid and put a thumb throttle off a 400ex on it or my personal favorite a terrycabel dual-gasser. Man what a difference.

You know I do kinda like them, have never got a chance to ride one though. I kinda like the idea of having an auto on a sport for what I do with it anyway it would be kinda cool. Not to mention the Kawi V-twins sound incredible.  I'll keep my eyes open for one of those too. Do they have reverse by any chance?

Yes they surely do. Reverse-Neutral-Forward on the left handlebar grip. Get one and get a set of Big gun or HMF duals and get it jetted and you are good to go buddy.

I've been battling a high load bog with the Shee since I got it and I finally got it fixed. I cleaned the carbs 3 times so I knew it wasn't them causing the prob, and since I don't know jack about 2-strokes I started calling around. A buddie of mine used to race them a bit and he suggested I start with changing the reeds cause depending on how old they are they could be weak. I figured what the hey they are cheap and it can't hurt, so I put some Boyeson Power Reeds in it. MAN WHAT A DIFFERENCE! I took it out on the road in front of my house and after riding it normal to get it warmed up a bit I turned around and punched it in first, the darn thing tried to take off without me lol. When I punched it the bike just stood up on the grab bar and made me fall off the back of it. Now as sore as my tail and back was I couldn't wipe the smile off my face, now that I was prepared for the newfound power, I got back on and did it again just without me falling off the back of it lol. The thing wants to lift the front wheels in 1st 2nd and 3rd now, the guy said he did a stock rebuild on the thing and only went .030 over and its still got the factory fatties and factory silencers just gutted. At this point I'm starting to wonder if he was being completely honest with me, I knew Banshees were powerfull but holy crap its got almost as much power as my freinds LTR498 and I'm betting now it would have given my 460EX fits. When I first got it and was battling the bogging I didn't think it was going to be as fast as my 460EX but I'm thinking otherwise now, first chance I get I'm gonna race a kid around here who has nearly the same setup I had on mine but his is only a 440.

Well I got to ride for 3 1/2 hrs out at the sand pit today and the Shee did great ran strong the whole time. I also ran into the kid on the 440EX, ask and you shall recieve I guess, and I raced him 4 times he barely beat me all 4 times never by more then 3/4 of a bike length. I think his just hooks up better cause the guys that were watching said it looked like I was spinnin the whole race, like it never hooked up. And his was hooked and going at the same time, I think on something harder/grippier I would have edged him out by a little but oh well. I've got a guy coming over to the house tommorow thats supposed to be bringing cash for the Shee if he likes it hes gonna take it home. I've got my fingers crossed, cause after I talked to the kid on the 440EX for a while I found out that he is trying to sell it to get a 4x4, he fell absolutely in love with my Rancher. I think I can get that EX for the same price that I'm getting for the Shee, and before someone says anything I know Shees can go faster then EXs can but I don't care I WANT another 400EX. I also found out that it still has stock cams in it so I'm sure my 460EX would beat my Shee now if me and that 440 were so close. This was the first time out at the sand pit that I've had the Banshee running dang near perfect and it was a blast but its still the most uncomfortable sport quad that I've ridden any distance on.  I also got my first in person look at the Can-am DS450 and I like that one, there were two other 450s out there a LTR450 with just a pipe and a TRX450R with a pipe, jet kit, K&N, and different ratio sprockets and the DS450 was stock and still won almost every race. All three were dead even just about, every race it was who got the holeshot that won. I do see myself getting another Shee later on down the road to play with like as a drag bike but for now I just want something more comfortable a little cheaper to work on and 4 stroke with electric start.
