Yesterday afternoon, there was an incident here in Albany with 2 young boys and a rescuer on the Flint River.  2 boys, 10 & 11, were swimming in the shallows of the river downtown and got caught up in the current in a dropoff.  A 23 year old and friends jumped in to rescue the boys, saving the 10 year old.  The 11 year old boy and his rescuer went under and were not seen again.  The body of the 11 year old was found late last night, but the 23 year old has still not been found as of this morning.  The 23 year old was DJ Vinson.  He is a friend of mine.  His father and uncle, along with several cousins have been in our hunting club for years.  We are all hoping for the best, but it doesn't look promising.  Please keep his family in your prayers as this is a difficult time for everyone.  Thank you.

Prayers sent.  When I read this, this versus from the Bible came to mind.

John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Last Friday nite my sons best friend lost his brother in a tragic accident. He hit the center wall on I-75 and wrecked. Got out safe but hurt. He got by the center wall away from his car that was in the travel lane. As he was talking to his mom on the phone he was struck by a Suburban and knocked across the center wall and was ran over by several vehicles. He was 17. His mother will probably never recover from this and she along with the family need stong prayers to help cope. Thanks to all.

Just wanted to throw an update here...

DJ's funeral was yesterday afternoon.  There were several hundred people at the service, with what looked like better than a hundred vehicles in procession to the cemetary.  I think I counted 22 police, sheriff, and fire vehicles in escort.  WOW!  His parents were presented a posthumous Medal of Valor from the Albany Dive/Rescue team, a proclamation from the mayor of Albany, and letters from Congressman Sanford Bishop for his efforts.  The family of the two boys were there also, with the uncle (who is also the police chief in Moultrie) speaking.  As tragic as this is for the families involved, it is amazing the way people come out in a time of need.  I had known DJ since he about 10 years old when his dad and uncle joined our hunting club.  I hope I can have my children turn out the way he did, and the way I've seen his cousins grow.  As sad as it is to lose someone, use this situation to learn one thing - think of and do for others more than what you would expect in return.  This is what has been said over and over all week about DJ!
