now you have to take your 2x6x8 p.t. board and rip it down to 3 7/8" and plane it down to 1 3/8" and router the 4 long edges. you can leave it 8 foot for now

put lots of grease on it all over. this will help it go in and protect the frame from ever rusting

sorry forgot to take a pic of this step. you can use the piece of wood that you cut off or something else if that piece of wood isn't going to cut it. like a piece of steel that is close to the size of the board or smaller, not bigger because it will mess up the frame.

and use that to recess the wood into the frame, allmost to the most front a-arm mount, you can tell by tapping a wrench against the frame and the noise is different where the wood is.

then you can weld a plate back or leave it open like i did and then put it back together

it is the strongest and lightest thing you can do to a can-am renegade or outlander frame for under $20

Wood????

I just did the same modification to my renegade this past weekend, but used metal.  Very easy mod and great protection if you ride them hard.

yes wood. they don't make a piece or pieces of metal the right measurements the wood is easily moldable, and is lighter, and will let the frame twist a little bit more  than steel will

Probably a stupid question, but what if you ever need to get the wood back out?  Warranty work or if it breaks or something?

lets say the steel tubing mod is a 100% stronger.... how much do you think this is? i am a carpenter, so this way is easy for me.. i have been wanting to do this, but i do not weld....honestly, do you think this will work? i assume you used treated wood?

it not that your building a bullet proof frame, you could i guess put solid steel in the frame and add 80 lbs and that would be stronger. all the wood does is reiforces the frame the frame cannot dent in on itself witch is the cause of most to all frame failures. and is still ligther and cheaper than the steel mod. i don't want to debat what's better. this is what i did because of other people's recomendation

and yes i belive it's the best way to go. and yes the p.t. stands for pressure treated

and i don't no why i would ever want to take it out, after all it the frame that has zero warrenty on it. sounds weird if i went in to the dealer for a blown motor and he said the motor warrenty was voided because the frame is stronger than stock specs. lol

well, i think i might do this.... i would be more reassured with steel i think, but as i said, i cannot weld.. so i guess i has to be stronger than nothing!!did you just use a cut-off wheel to take off the back of the frame?

a sawsall or cut off wheel or torches or dremmel they all work good. the steel is still going to bend just like the wood if you slam a tree at 30 mph

You can rip a 2x6 with a circular saw (or hand saw even) to width.  And you can block plane (by hand) or use a belt sander to achieve the desired thickness.  That's how they used to build houses back before there were power tools!

Nice Swamp!  Good Idea. I also did the steel tube mod on mine. It did add 13lbs but I can't tell the difference. Thanks for your pictures.

Three 1.25 x 1.25 16 guage 52 1/4 long square tubes welded side by side fit perfectly.

I was told that this is the same kit mike penland run's on his gncc race can am's. i could've done the metal but this was the forth bike i have done this to, im getting pretty good at it. and so far no problems, the frame doesn't have one ding in the bottom of them with the board in it.
