If your a Honda guy I would look at the 400ex, but it is not the best in it's class. I'd be looking at a z400 if you want to get into racing.

The 400ex is a dog out of the factory. Like troublemaker said the z400 is your best bet. The new one are pretty sweet with the upgraded suspension and fuel inject. The plastic is nice on them two. I have a kfx450 and kinda wishing i woulda got the new z.

wellif it is your first time on a sport quad you will scare the hel out of your self on a 450. you should probly get a 400ex. as a matter of fact, you should probly get mine just joking with you.  but in all honesty, mine or somebody elses, get a 400ex. these quads aare BULLIT PROOF. but if you are wnting to rce, all mine needs is a pair of front shocks to be completly race ready. but it isnt like you cant race without them. it just wouldnt be as comftorable. if you are interested pm me

I would go with the z/kfx 400 way before a 400ex.  And thats coming from someone who has a honda.  I love the 450's, but the 400 is no good when you compare it to the suzuki.  Much better bike.  Its liquid cooled, has better suspension (unless you get an early model) and has more power.  Just putting it out there.

yes you are correct, but that is when comparing stock to stock. after being modded it really doesnt make much of a difference weather you have a suzuki or honda

From the bit I have rode on each bike you would have to put a pipe, filter and jet a Honda just to keep up with a Suzuki. So their is $300 plus I also found that the shocks on the z400 are a fair bit better so their is about $700 for shocks that are half decent. Now your looking at $1000 just to keep up with a Z400.

Well if you want to have a awesome stock bike then get the new KTM's or a YFZ450. I heard the KFX 450's are decent too.

Some that nobody mentioned were the warrior and blaster. They are a ton of fun to play around on stock and could be made pretty fast with a few mods. You would also have a lot less money invested. But if you want a 400cc bike I would go with a newer model z. I would try to get an 05' or newer because of the suspention, frame and motor upgrades on those. And you know once you start racing you probably wont be able to stop.

thats a good point. at mx races they might as well call the ameture class the blaster class. it seems like everybody starts out on a blaster

If your considering a Zuki I wouldn't look at anything but the LTR 450, they will tear the Z400 a new you know what. But I'd still take a 400ex over either one of them, I don't know what it is about them but imo they are about the most comfortable bike to get on and go fast I've ridden. I had a 03 460EX that was an absolute blast to race around the local sand pits and hustle some money from some dumb kids too lol.

This is gonna be his first sport bike. He needs to stick to 400s or smaller. I could be completely wrong though, you could be the next doug gust. I think you should try to ride the ones your looking at and see which one you like better. Everybody is different and every machine performs differently.

That 460EX was my first. I just rode it easyish for a while till I got used to it then my thumb never left the throttle lol. But for beginners the Warriors are fun, the 300EXs are fun, if you want to be different Blaster, Mojave 250s were pretty quick for a 250. The only prob with the smaller ones is that you will get used to and out grow something that size quick, imo its a better idea to get something in the size you will keep for a while and take it easy for a while till you get used to it.
