My exhaust manifold bolts keep loosening up on my 800 Sportsman. Does the repair manual state whether to use any type of thread locker or are there some other tricks to eliminate them from loosening up?

I am afraid to use thread locker without checking as I might not ever get the bolts out when I need to without destroying the threads in the engine housing.

Thanks!

Try some hi temp silicone.  It might help stick em in there without having to put thread locker in there.

Problem with thread locker is that heat is used to weaken the thread locker so i might be pointless to use it on exhaust

You can get that high temp thread lock.  It might work.  Is it a stud or a bolt that goes in there?  Do you have easy access to get in there with a breaker bar in the event that you need to break it loose some time in the future?

are you torquing them to specs or just tighting them up?

if there are threaded studs in the head, some self locking nuts may be answer. if it uses bolts ,you might try putting some lock washers on the bolts. torque to the recommended specs.

They are bolts and I don't know what the torque spec. It is just the bolts on the right side of the machine as you ride it.

I was wrong about them being bolts or studs. They are studs.  I decided to remove the whole exhaust and see what was happening and if the gasket was bad. As I removed what I thought were bolts were actually studs with the nuts stuck on them. As i removed all four, two came off as nuts and lock washers and two came of as studs with the nuts stuck on them. I am going to order a new gasket and stud set and put those in with the correct torque spec.

Thanks for everyones help.

I found more interesting stuff I felt I should share while working on the exhaust. When I removed my exhaust pipe, I found it had a crack in it. I have attached a picture showing the location. I probably won't have found or known about the crack until it was to late if I hadn't taken it off. When it is bolted up and the muffler springs are installed, the crack is pushed almost closed. I am going to take it into work and get it welded. Anyone else ever seen this before?

Thanks again.
