I just picked up my new '07 last week. I experienced this problem right out of the gate. Got the machine home from the dealer, warmed it up on the trailer, put it in reverse and it died. Okay so it wasn't warm enough. Upon restart I had the D1/D2/ESP flashing. I was stumped so I called a friend over who also has an '07. All we did at that time was to make sure it was in neutral and cycle the key......problem solved.

Fast forward to the weekend and my first ride on it. A couple of times either by stall or me accidentally trying to start it in gear w/o the front brake applied the flashing in sued. Each time I performed the same task as the day I brought it home and continued on w/o issue.

Bottom line, is this a angle sensor issue or operator error? I would hate to think my BRAND NEW machine is already experiencing issues. Good thing I bought the warranty I suppose.

Been reading last few days on the angle sensor issues........but brand spankin' new?

That part having any meaning I was unaware of until this evening after doing some reading. I do not recall. If and when it happens again I'll make note of it.

How many flashes mean what exactly? Is that documented here?

5 Flashes indicate a failed angle sensor or ECM on Honda rubicons, assuming that you are referring to a rubicon?

Hondamechanic on here has an online manual, I'm sure he'll chime in and help you out. I just know about the code 5 cause mine has been to the shop NUMEROUS times for it. They finally determined that it was a failed connector for the angle sensor, once they replaced that mine has operated fine.

Yes it is a Rubicon. Is there any chance of it just being a freak happening/mis reading by the sensor or is there indeed something wrong? What if it flashes more or less than 5 times?

I will make note of how many flashes if it happens again.

It flashes in sequence a certain number of times. A different number of flashes indicates a different problem code. Being that the bike is practically brand new it's probably a "freak happening". If it's still under the manufacturers warranty then they shouldn't have any problem at all with repairing/recalling the part.

The more I think about it, I believe it only did it on in gear starts w/o the front brake applied. So maybe it's self inflicted.

I hope.

Ummmm, because of the cooler getting emptied at a good rate, my memory of the actual events might be a touch off. I don't store the machine here so I can't just run down in the garage and "play" with it. I think mine will try to start w/o the front brake. I'll go to my friends house tomorrow and try to recreate the situation and count flashes.

Take it back to the dealer.

That's the exact thing I tried to avoid buying a brand new machine. If it keeps doing it I will. I won't be happy about it though.

The bike shouldn't start in gear without squeezing the front brake handle.. First check that the brake handle is moving freely and not dragging and possibly staying on ..
You could test the switches on the front brake yourself with an ohm meter ... There are 2 switches , the top switch is the brake light switch , the lower switch is the front brake inhibitor switch ..

Do a code retrieval and post the code # ...

I would also recommend taking it back. There should be absolutely nothing wrong with a brand new bike.

I'll do a code retrieval this afternoon. I could be wrong about the trying to start in gear scenerio but it has happened minimal 3 times under different conditions......first time unloading it after buying it.

I'll report back later.

Thanks

It is possible the dealer didn't initialize the system, won't effect the starting in gear without the brake, but will give problems with the automatic system.

My buddy called me after reading this and refreshed my memory on the events leading up to the flash.

To correct my previous postings......

A: It will not start in gear w/o the front brake applied{normal}
B: What is happening is when it stalls in gear for whatever reason, not warmed up or what ever........when it does die/stall in gear I was putting it back in neutral w/o cycleling the key and restarting it then it would flash.

So based on B do we still think I may have an issue ?

Honda Mechanic?

Have you checked the battery cables?

Make sure they are nice and tight on both ends of each cable.

That could be a few things ..

You can check what code it was , but if it needs any parts then it will have to go to the dealer for warranty..

Problem is solved for now.

The stealership did a  re-sync then could not replicate the problem afterwards.

For the ones that don't know how to sync it up.....

Hold both shift levers while turning on key.
Immediately release shift buttons
Then hit up-down-up on the shift buttons.
Then push the throttle wide open and release.

You'll hear a winding noise in the tranny for a sec then it's done.

The tech told me this is a procedure they are "supposed" to do when putting them together.

BRING IT BACK

I did as I posted above.

When I retrieved the code before taking it to the dealer the N flashed 4 times stopping on the 5th. W/O going through the code retrieval as posted by Honda Mechanic, when it stalled in gear not touching anything else I would hear a winding down noise then the ESP/D1/D2 would flash 5 times, if that means anything.

I was able to get it to happen repeatedly when it was cold, stalling it in gear. After the sync by the tech the issue went away.
