My epi kit got here yesterday! I am going to attempt, NO I am going to do the install today, thisevening, tonight and tommarrow if it takes it! :) I'm pretty sure that I can get it done thisevening! Any last minute tips, tricks or anything! I am not realy conserened with the outer spring and weights! They seem to be pretty straight forward! Its the inner wet clutch work that I am a little conserened with??? I would be so greatful for anything! I am sure that everything has been said before but if you could say it again it would save the time searching for it! Thanks ! I am off to lowes to get the items for the spring compresion tool! YaHoooo! Here I go, no turning back now!

The EPI kit is a good thing, I have it in my Vinson and like it alot. You can go to Arcticchat . com and on the atv section under performance/technical info, they have a very good pictorial of the primary clutch spring install.

I have a bone to pick with whoever on here said that you could install this kit without using a spring compression tool. There is NO WAY for one person (or two people) to compress this spring by hand enough to get the nut off the secondary spring.

I agree I remember the post where some guy said he and a buddy did it by hand. Man I bent a 3/8 inch thick piece of metal (home made spring compresor) compressing that spring. I do not see any way a person could do that by hand.

me and a friend used zipties to help compress the spring then begin loosing the nut ounce its almost off have your buddy push down wile you loosen the nut it worked fine for us. i put the spring on and the holder pushed down wile he threaded the nut back on. it can be taken off and the new one put on without a spring compresser although a compresser would be the easiest

D-smith,

I have the same engin you have with the same mods... And how do you like it? Mine is in the AC frame... All though i see in your sig.. You don't have the epi clutch kit. I do With the purple springs.... I think it makes a difference... My next step it the 650 diff so i have a locled diff... As of now i have 2-diffs... For mud bog comp's.. I put the locked diff in.. Other wise i run the limited slip.

"" The install went off without any problems! I had to make the spring compression tool ( I could not have installed the spring without it, thanks guys) and I also made a tool to hold the clutches still so the could be torqued to the correct foot pound! I will try to post pictures later! It was my little girls B-day ( daddy's girl is 2) today so I haven't got to ride it yet! I will post picture and oppion on ride ASAP! Thanks to all that gave advice and to those who did not give any advice, Thank you also! I took pictures of the complete install and tools that I made! So maybee they can be of help to someone in the future!
The wet clutch springs were no were nere as bad to install as I had thought they would be! This has tought me not to think to much about it, just start and make sure to finish!
The install took about 3 1/2 to 4 hours not including the time to make the tools! The spring compression tool took about 45 minutes to 1 hour! The rotor holder ( tool to hold the clutches still for correct torque) took about 10 minutes to make!
Thanks guys! More soon!

Does any one have the High Lifter Outlaw clutch kit?
Would a clutch kit be worth the money, on my King with 26 in tires, or would it be pointless?
Just thinking about some future mods.

Thanks

muddedprairie-
I LIKE THE WAY MY BIKE IS SETUP. I'VE BEEN LOOKING AT THE EPI CLUTCH KITS FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS BUT WITH THE HOLIDAYS I HAVEN'T REALLY HAD MY HEAD IN IT. RBREAK GOT THE CLUTCH KIT FOR HIS MANUAL VINSON AND HE LOVES IT. BASED ON THIS I WILL PROBABLY GET ONE WHILE THE BBK IS BEING INSTALLED. MY WHEELER FEELS TO ME LIKE IT HAS PLENTY OF POWER. I CAN'T IMAGINE HOW IT WILL FEEL WITH THE BBK AND CLUTCH KIT INSTALLED. AS FAR AS POWER I'M PLEASED WITH THE BIKE. THE VINSON IS A STOUT MACHINE.
AS FOR WHAT I DON'T LIKE... LET'S SEE. I DON'T LIKE THE SRA BEACUSE IT RIDES ROUGH AND IT'S VERY LIMITING. I CAN ONLY RUN AS BIG A TIRE AS I CAN MAKE FIT. I'M NOT BIG INTO CUTTING AND CHOPPING JUST TO PUT ON BIGGER TIRES... A LITTLE YEAH OK, BUT I'M NOT TAKING MY FENDERS OFF. THE AC 650 AND OTHERS RUN 29.5" WITH LITTLE TO NO LIFT OR MODIFICATION. WITH MOST PEOPLE RUNNING THE 29.5" LAWS AND NOW 30" MUDLIGHTS, LET'S JUST SAY THAT THE RUTS AREN'T GETTING ANY MORE SHALLOW. DEEPER RUTS MEANS HARDER TO GET AROUND. I HATE DRAGGING THE REAR DIFF AROUND IN THE MUD.
ALL IN ALL I LIKE THE VINSON... FOR ME IT'S GOT PLENTY OF POWER, SEEMS TO BE BUILT WELL, AND IT'S A GOOD LOOKING UNIT. IF THEY HAD AN IRS VINSON THAT WOULD MAKE ME VERY HAPPY.

Yes! I got to ride a little today! The down hill engine breaking is much inproved! I guees that is all you guys are worried about! Right! Well, for those of you who want to know if there were any other inprovements! Yes, Yes, Yes! Better out of the hole! I marked a distance that the bike hit 30 mph on a very consistent pattern! With the EPI kit ( complete kit with weights, inner springs and large secondary clutch spring) installed the bike got to 33 mph once and 32 three other tries! The temperature was close to the same on the two days that I tried this! This was on asphault! So the tires did not realy slip any! Had to set up on the seat o little with the EPI kit installed!Felt like the bike was trying to do something a little odd ( a wheelie ) in high gear! I am not saying a 60 degree, front end two feet off the ground wheelie! But it was trying to raise the front up off the ground a little! In high gear with me on it at 360 pounds was an odd feeling! :) :) In low gear it will flip right over on you no matter where I was on the seat ( grass or asphault)! No body english, it just wanted to come over on me unless I feathered the throttle! I did not do this kit to ride wheelies, not my ideal of fun (sorry, not ment ot offend)! My hopes was to get up to speed faster! That was the result that I got! The bike pulls harder than before! No dought about it! Seems to have better throttle when I want it! I did not do any top speed test! Sorry! I have never had my bike to top speed! But i can tell you that it helped in all aspects of the bikes power up to 45 to 50 MPH!
Below are some pictures of the install!

One thing I still don't understand is why the Yamaha's use grease on the weights and we don't. The setup is almost the same. You would think that a little grease would help the weights roll freely in their channels.

My guess is that as open as the weights realy are thy would collect so much dirt and need to be cleaned so often! That would have to effect durability and function!

Dave -- Nice job!!

What kit did you end up putting on?? Stock tire or oversize tire kit?

What tires are you running?

I've been on the fence about a kit. You just made up my mind. My biggest thing was the engine braking, thats what I really want to improve.

Thanks for taking the time for all this info. Best clutch thread I've seen yet.

Thanks!I went with the EPI stock tire kit above 2000 feet elevation! I live and ride at about 2500 feet above sea level! I am running ITP XTR radial 26 inch tires on ITP C-Series Type 7 black powder coated 12 inch wheels! They are a little taller / wider than stock and weigh more! I did the stock tire kit based on the other forums that I had read! I did not want to lose any thing from the top speed! Even though I have never ran my bike at top speed! I want it there if I ever need it! I weigh 360# plus and tried to make the clutch slip on a very steep hill and it just pulled hard all the weight to the top! i think the only differance in the stock kit over the oversized tire kit is the weights! If so that would be the easyiest thing to change in the entire kit!
Here is a list of tools that the EPI instructions give!
Metric socket set
Torque wrench- I used two 1/2 drive foot pound and 1/4 drive inch pound.
Spring tool or needle noise pliers- I used needle noise pliers
Clutch compression tool or shop press(EPI part # cct500) I made my own compression tool! From the suggesions of other peoples ideals! Thanks!
1/2 inch impact gun
Suzuki Oil- I replaced mine with Amsoil
Punch or spanner wrinch- I used a punch withthe end ground to a little bit of an angle!
Flat tip screwdriver
Clutch shoe remover-( Suzuki part # 0990-33540) I did not have this! I made the rotor holder to hold the clutches for correct torqueing!
Sliding shaft (Suzuki part # 09930-30104) I did not have this! I used a large two jaw puller set.
I also would go ahead and pick up a new oil filter and filter wrench from Suzuki ( if you don't have a filter wrench already) ""

Check out my yahoo pictures for photos of the clutch install!

Here are some better measurements on the home made tools!
The compression tool = 1/4 flat steel 12 inches long ( I had to double mine but I only used 1 1/2 inch wide). If you use 2 inch wide it might not bend with only one piece!
1/2 threaded rod= 1 piece 12 inches long and two pieces 6 inches long
6) 1/2 inch grade 5 large flat washers
11) 1/2 inch grade 5 nuts

The three holes on the top piece of the clamp! Center the middle hole at 6 inches! Space the outer holes 1 1/2 inch on center from the middle hole! The center of the outer holes should be three inches apart! So if you use a 12 inch piece of steel your 1/2 inch holes should be 4 1/2 inches in from each end and the center should be at six inches from each end! Just be sure the outer holes are three inches on center apart!

The rotor holder:
I used two pieces of 1/4 x 1 inch aluminum ( it was already in my shop ).
3) 1/4 inch x 1 1/2 long grade 5 bolts
3) 1/4 grade 5 nuts
one piece was 18 inches long
one piece was 9 inches long
Long piece= drill one 1/4 inch hole 1/2 inch in from end and the other hole 8 1/2 inches in from the same end with the first hole!
Short piece: drill one hole 1/4 inch in from the ends one sith sides!
Of you can do what I did and clamp them together and drill them at the same time!
The measuring does not have to right of with this tool!
Leave the center bolt finger tight so the tool can be opened or close to fit!
I would recomend that you do the measuring for yourself before making your tools!

This worked for me and i hope it will help you also!

""FYI! I could not have done this install without the compression tool! There are others on this and other fourms that say they did it by hand! I bent 1 and 1/2 inch wide by 1/4 inch thick steel! I had to double it to get the spring off! Trying to do this without a compression is going to get someone hurt, BAD! I did notice that one of the people that said they did it by hand now has put some of my photos in there sig! It looks like Mcgill has re posted his and my photos together! Check them out they may save you from eating a spring and a few teeth! I have got to give credit where credit is due! I would not have tried this without hte advice of this and other fourms! Thanks guys! ""

I agree it is hard by hand to get the spring back on..dont want anyone to get hurt so if you can make a compression tool then go for it but if not then be prepared to have someone help to hold the pressure...I held it down while my wife started the nut......I added some of DavAsh's pics and listed them in my sig in order of install for people.... Is there any way to tell that you are installing the spring the correct way? Clockwise, counter-clockwise?

When you are putting the spring in place 9by hand or with the compression tool) just look at the spring and turn it to the left (counter clock). Here is a link to my post on the Nyroc site.

I hope this helps. ""

Been waiting for three weeks for a new clutch gasket from Suzuki to install my EPI clutch kit.  I want it intalled ASAP so my question is do I need a new one or can I just install without it (the new one)?  Should I wait?

you might get lucky and it not fall apart but if it does then your bike gets to set and wait for the gasket and you wont get to ride it while waiting for it to come in...
