I'm fixing my wifes rear outer CV joint on her 08 400HO. Just wondering if EPI's CV joint rebuild kits are pretty good. Do they come with halfway decent instructions? Anybody got any good pointers on replacing them?

Thats exactly what happened to mine. Same location too, However, the clamp came off of the boot while she was riding in some muddy water. I think a stick or a rock got hung up between the a-arm and the boot causing water and junk to get up inside the cage and thats all she wrote. I'm going to order mine from EPI...I think they're kind of a middle of the road type brand. I've never really heard of the Hawkeyes/Sportsman 300,400 giving this kind of problem. It does have me wondering though. I don't need this to happen again because I had to tow her about 10 miles back to our campsite because she could'nt hardly control the 4-wheeler.

Just put a EPI Joint Rebuild into my 450 last weekend.  Pretty simple process.  There directions while gnereric (list major retention methods) are specific.

Brass hammer to pound the inner race off the shaft is nice.  If it doesn't work, you can pound the race further onto the shaft to expose a portion of the snapring to apply some heat to the snapring to facilitate easier removal.

The aftermarket clamps are not as nice as the factory polaris clamps in my opinion, try to save the factory popo clamps.  If you use the aftermarket bands then you'll want a tensioning tool.  I just cut a slot down the middle of a 3/8 bolt with a hacksaw to use to tighten the aftermarket bands.

Didn't mic the race or cage or balls, but they maybe oversized by a tad.  THe joint was definately much tighter with teh rebuild kit then before.

yea my boot was messed up too but it happened probably 15 minutes before it broke... i was on my way in... no mud or anything just out for a ride and something stabbed the boot... i ordered the rebuild kit but they told me its on back order for 2-3 weeks... i told her just to send it when they get it cause 72 bucks sounds alot better then the 180 for the polaris version....

Yeah I've been doing a little research over the past few weeks on other 4-wheeler websites and forums and noticed that this seems to be a regular problem with the hawkeyes and its happening in the same location as ours (left rear outer). It sounds like to me that the cage is apparently weak from the factory. I'm going to probably replace both sides of mine with an aftermarket brand (probably EPI). It sounds like their cv joint rebuild kits are pretty good. The only thing that ticks me off about this is that the 4wheeler only has 750 miles and is driven by my wife, who is pretty easy on it. If it had like 2500 to 3000 miles on it, I would completely understand this happening. It wouldn't suprise me one bit if I have to replace it again in another 600 to 800 miles. We drive 50 to 80 miles a day up in West VA.(Hatfield McCoy, wagon wheel) and I don't really need to be towing her back all of the time.

ya i understand that... i think mine only has 100 and something... mine is lifted but i left the back tires leaning out alittle so that the joint wouldnt be at that bad of an angle... o well i'll find someway of making it reliable...
